Trophy or R27

I am going back to look at a 197 R27 in Nimbus with 21k on the clocks and 18 months of warranty remaining in two weeks after a go in a 200. This is going to set me back 11.5k which seems to be a very fair price.

However, in the back of my mind and from consistent nagging from my wife I should consider a Trophy. From looking at PH adverts they will cost about 7-7.5k so a pretty hefty 3k difference.

I know some ppl have had both and wondered what others thought?

Btw, I have ruled out a Focus RS and Megane R26. This is becuase the Meggy is too boring inside (bar the seats) and the Focus RS per my wife is trying too hard and chavvy.

Both very different cars, my friends 197 drives a hell of a lot different from my trophy. Really you need to drive both.

It depends what you want in a car, you have the raw feel in the trophy, but the 197 will be alot more refined.

The Trophy I haven't driven but don't expect it to be alot different to my old 172 really.

I've driven neither but as above it depends what your after. I'd like a 197/200 simply because its a change from the 172 where as the Trophy is still a MK2 Clio.

Drive one! Massively different!
I'd drive both then decide which you prefer. Trophy owner's will say Trophy. 197 owner's will say 197. You're very unlikely to get an unbiased opinion.

The 197 will be nicer to live with, but pricier (worse mpg than a Mini Cooper S Works!!)
I'd imagine the Trophy would retain more value.

Haha, yeah, I have been slagging of 197/200 for years about their fuel but I did love the seating position, the steering wheel was also much better size.

Hopefully going to have a word with Steve at allvehciles and go and test drive both back to back when he has them in and make a decision.

Yeah Fletch, I got quoted 14k for a 200 in white with Recaros and Speedlines.

14k is still 2.5k less than a 197 which is a big difference. It doesn't sound it but when you are writing the chq it suddenly becomes alot.

It would be 20 months newer though.

If the finances allow, the only reason to go for the 197 instead of a 200 would be the exterior. Are you only considering clio's?

True mate..

I think i'd go for the R27 over the trophy.

Warren:

I did look at some other cars but none of them interested me.

I went to look at a Focus RS and tbh I wasn't bothered about it! (I wanted to love this car too, maybe I tried too hard)

Went to Renault for a look at a R26 and I have to say inside it's very boring and again didn't really interest me.

Just went to have a nosey at this 200 nothing in particular and ended up really liking it (I conversely wanted to hate this car but was again the opposite.)

I could afford a brand new one but I often thing do I really want to. It's a diff one. Going to drive the 197 and 200 back to back next week too. See what is what.

My mate has a R27 and i have a Trophy, my Trophy inspired him to get a R27 after he drove it.
The R27 is bigger, feels better built and has better brakes. The Trophy feels more focused, raw and quicker. Straight line speed my Trophy is slightly quicker but nothing in it really. Around the twisty bits there is no difference between them but i would say the Trophy has more feel to it. And dare i even say if you upgrade the brakes on the Trophy which would cost you approx £400 it would be quicker than a R27 in the twisty bits. Same goes if you upgrade the suspension on the R27 probably better than i Trophy.
IMO the Trophy is better but i do like driving the R27.
Also the Trophy has done alot of it depreciation where as the R27 will probably still have a few grand to come off it before it slows down so you could be set to loose ££££ quickly.
Best to drive them both back to back. :)

I've had both.
Both lots of fun.
Even spending £400+ on trophy brakes they are nothing compared to the monster 197's brembos which don't need upgrading at all. Even for track use.
If you go for a 197 get the latest no' possible as it will have all the latest software & better ratio box.
On the ragged edge the 197 is more composed, a 2 b not a lot in it.
Driver makes more of a difference than car.

I'm a 182 fan but if ya can afford the r27 go for it specially the nimbus there sweet. The r27s do suffer niggles though with seats kangerooing etc.

One car is a future classic and already a cult car...the other is a run of the mill hot hatch.

And also the steering wheels on the 197 / R27's are starting to 'melt' as the 1*2 wheels did.
Couple of pics of my Trophy and my mates Nimbus R27 to help you make your mind up:-
