They do have quite stiff/heavy clutches but nothing that you wont get used to after a day or so.

Religious servicing a must, the belts like you said also are very important that they have been done..!

ok great thanks. ye thats it i thought perhaps a heavy clutch may be a sign of wear etc. i have owned 2 clios before, on L and R plate, rt model etc.
well dont know yet im hoping to get for good price, milage seems ok and so does the spec and condition and details.
The clio 172 is the only car with gd spec i can think of getting on my budget, just now sold my astra coupe se2, loved it, but fancied a change. think the only thing id have over a clio is a 206 gti 180.

ye will service it asap aswell at home.

any tips on good/nice/subtle mods etc that wont make it chavvy?

the 180 is pap! i was going to get one instead of my 172 until i drove a mates. clio has the better of it all day long!

check if aux belt and tensioners (i.e. kit) was done at same time as cambelt (did they do the complete cam belt kit?) bonuses which might have been done at same time would be water pump and dephaser.

it's almost as important to get aux belt and tensioner done at same time as cam belt, in fact i think renault stipulate that aux belt should be done every 36k miles now.

what mileage has the car done mate ?

thanks guys, well the pug is an extra few hundred quid which i dont really want to pay.

thanks mortster, i dont know if the full kit was done, they just said on the phone that the timing belt had been done, its on 54,000 miles now, new discs and barkes from mot, so is the cam belt the timing belt? i have no clue about cars:(. so if i buy this car, does that mean then that i could have to pay to have the rest of work done etc? and is it expensive?

hi mate, yep timing is the cam belt, that's the important one to get done, just check that some paperwork mentions the cambelt being done, dont just go on verbal mentions from the garage.

dont worry too much about the other things to prevent you from buying the car, if it seems a good example, and you have previous paperwork to back things up then it should be ok.

there are some good forum posts here to show the 172/182 service schedule to give an idea of some of the things that should have been done,

also i found an excellent tick chart done by a fellow ph1 guy on here Sym0n, hope he doesnt mind me linking to it : http://clio.sym0nd0.com/clio-ph1-172-service-schedule-and-part-numbers/
