Is this a good tool to buy to do the oil filter removal on a canister tye filter, ie 172's?

Yes, or a screwdriver which is the option I usually go for!

Fair play, i only do my own car tbf, so it only ever comes round every 6-8k miles so screwdriver is sufficient. If I were you I'd get the strap type tool though.

Thats what i do for these screw on ones like the Clios and pugs

This is one of the best, most time saving, pain relieving tools i have ever bought, worth every single penny. Makes changing the oil literally a 10 minute job.

i think im gonna buy that laser tool anyway and a strap one to add to my ever growing tool set! i suppose every car will need different ones, so i get that one and a strap one i should be covered!

How do you know what car i have and how long it takes to to change the oil out of interest?

think i've got 2 or 3 cheap ones (strap/chain efforts) and they're all useless - just have a go by hand or use a screwdriver

they'll make sense if you're a prof mechanic and are doing several every day, but DIY, i'd not bother

Depends how tight it was put on. Just changed the oil on mine yesterday and it wouldnt budge. Time before managed it comando

just get a chain one. saying that I find mine hard work sometimes. depends on the car you're trying to use it on and how much space. I'm sure there is one that you can attach to a ratchet, but can't find it.

looks like it would be wise to buy a gripper and a strap/and or chain - as this will cover or vehicles im planning to change the filters on!

bought sum oil filter grips from machine mart 8 quid after borrowed my mates on the dci f8ckin ace bit of git everything else is too bulky

Thats what I use, find the halfrauds chain strips to just crush the filter if someones wanged it on toit. That'll get owt off with a decent size 1/2" ratchet. And you can get a spanner on it if access is low (as i have to do for the meggy).

My concern is there isn't much room for movement when trying to change the filter on the 172/182 so having a tool with handles won't be easy.

I managed to get mine off with the cheapo chain tool from Halfords. It is abit of pain pissing about due to their being little room, got to be careful to not snap any sensors around that area as well.

I take mine off by hand. If a garage has done it tight i use a strap.
