New Cambelt Problem

Hello,

I had my cambelt and auxillery belt changed yesterday and since i picked it up the car is almost stalling when i come to a stop. The revs are dropping below 10000.

Does this indicate that they have not done the work correctly?

Thank you.

A useless local garage. I know i shouldnt have gone there but they are convenient.

Where do i stand now? Can i get them to fix it or get my money back?

Thanks

There is one of these threads a day at the moment :(

I'd bet as above the timing is wrong - there is also a good chance a few other bits and bobs may have not been done properly. As usual you've got no real choice but to get it looked at by someone who knows.

+ I should hope it doesn't rev to 10000rpm or something has gone seriously tits up! ;)

I rest my case...

Why on earth did you take it to a place you describe as "a useless local garage" ?!?!! :S

You should have been given some sort of Warranty for the job, otherwise i wouldnt of handed over any cash.

Im guessing they do not have all the correct timing tools for the 172.
They said they will fix it if i get it in writing my another garage/RAC that it is there work that has caused this problem.
I am going to ring RAC now and hopefully get them to look at it for nothing as a garage will cost atleast £200.

Thanks for all the replies.

I'd be pretty sure they fucked it up! Speak to them and tell them the other garage are charging to look at the car and ask are they going to cover the costs? How much was the original bill?

The RAC and i took it back to the garage and they said they are going to look at it. I think they are still claiming it is something else though.

we "the specialists" are here for a reason

i've redone SO many cambelt jobs on 172/182's i've actually lost count, and had a few garages ring me to be gobby too (i love that part, the smug look on my face is fantastic!)

you MUST MUST MUST use all the tools when doing one

can someone please post a sticky about it!

agree 100% paid small fortune to have mine done when first got it, was in two minds too get it done cheaper somewhere else, so glad i didnt.

Are there special tools for the cliosport 172?, as i think they are using normal renault clio ones.

Anyway they are keeping it in over night to finish having a look tomorrow morning, so fingers crossed they fix it.

Not sport specific exactly, but there's extras for vvt, pulley locking tool that only Renault make, and isn't mentioned in autodata. If they went by autodata, they did it wrong

SO there are more tools than the pin in the side of the block and the locking tools at the back of the Cams?

I did the cambelt on mine with my step dad and I've not had a problem with it since. He's done a few though, had a run of them a few weeks back and even he said to me you can't do the job without the right tools otherwise it screws up.

Yes there's more than that, there's even more than one version of the pulley locking tool, it was revised for the 197 which has a different vvt pulley

Really don't remember the pulley locking tool - Cars been fine and we did it 5 months ago, I'm sure I would of noticed something by now!

If that's not used, it's not been done right

I have heard back from the garage and they said that the timing is spot on and that a hose had come loose and this was what was causing the revs to fluctuate and the car to almost stall. Does this sound likely or should I be worried?

Thanks

i have picked it up from the garage. It is definately much better now than it was before. However now when i stop the revs are about 1000 then slowly dropped to about 8000 then do not move.

Is there a way of telling if the timing is still out?

Thanks for all the help with this.

They said they used the locking tool.
I noticed my coolant level is just above minimum so could this have something to do my problem? i read on another thread that the revs fluctuating and a loss of coolant could be the water pump or a sensor?
Thanks

i would have had the water pump changed while they had it all off. i spent a fortune when i had mine done and had everything changed including all vvt gubbins. a bit over the top but piece of mind and i dont have to have it done again.

Water pump is on the Aux belt not the Cam. Seems to be a myth on here that they go wrong. If its not broke don't fix it IMO.

Why didnt you just have a new engine fitted for extra peace of mind ;)

As already said totally pointless changing the water pump unless its a really high miler, latter of which is just my own opinion.

If your water pump was to cause a problem its no 'biggy' anyway as its on the auxiliary side of things not the cambelt.

Im a mechainc at a vauxhall dealer, you stated that if others go by autodata they ain't doing it right. Ive got the 2009 addition and this states to use this tool that you've pictured along with others of course. Also autodate states its about a 5.4 hour job is renault generous with its times?. Im doing a head replacment on a vauxhall A12XER with both variable cam timing on inlet and exhausts and I only get 4.7 for the whole job.
