REAL motorway MPG

  Not a Clio
Right guys, I am buying a new car in the next few weeks and it will most likely be a 172! The problem is I commute 50 miles (round trip) pretty much all on the motorway and can't afford to be spending loads of money on fuel.

What do people get with normal motorway driving (70mph-ish)? I can't afford it to be much under 35mpg, but I'm hoping I will get better than that? Otherwise it's a.....a....diesel :dead:

  Fabia vrs tdi
I get 35 the trip comp says 38 but more like 36 if I drive at 70ish with the odd 3rd gear over taking hittin a 100 on a private road-ish

Driving a 172 on the motorway, you'd probably get about 40 mpg. I used to get 35mpg with mine, and that included town and quick driving.

I recently went to Manchester from Hastings and back. After getting on the motorway and sitting at around 75mph, I was seeing 43mpg on the trip. managed 400 miles to a tank costing £54 to fill.

Impressive results! I was just reading something on the internet (on cliosport?)about diesels not being that efficient over a petrol at motorway speeds? Apparently the main reason reps etc. use them is because of the lower tax on diesel cars? Is this BS?

I promised myself to stop driving like an idiot on this tank of v power stay below 3k rpm but I just can't do it :(

No diesels are great on motorways.

every car is pretty dull on motorways

its when your off the motorways the fun starts with the 1*2

Dunno about that. My Mapped Fabia vRS used to get 64+ mpg doing 70 on the motorway.

Lol. I get 72mpg @ 80mph. I get 79 @ 60mph. I get 60mpg @ 95.

Why buy a Clio Sport just for motorway driving if you're bothered about mpg?
Seems really pointless to me when there are much better built/economical cars out there.

So is it safe to say I have a problem somewhere, I'm getting 31-32 at 80 on motorway and that's it!

I mean that's not bad for a 2L in some ways but compared to some here that's terrible tbh from my car.

  Nothing at the mo :(

All kinds of things affect mpg, not just speed, have a search on tinternet, can't be bothered to write it all out.

Do you drive with all your windows open in 3rd gear @ 80mph?

Close windows and sunroof and take off the roof rack - reduces air resistance

Keep the air conditioning switched off unless you need it.

Clear out the junk - carrying excess weight wastes fuel.

Anticipate - instead of accelerating madly and then having to brake hard for junctions or traffic jams, try and anticipate the hold-up and moderate your speed so you don't need to brake so much. Braking is just throwing energy away!

Keep tyre pressures up - sticking to the recommended pressure will save fuel and also give better handling. (Goodyear reckon if your tyres are 20% under-inflated you use up to 10% more fuel!)

Use a high gear - engines are more efficient at low speed than high speed, because so much power is wasted just moving the parts of the engine. As long as the engine isn't labouring (at a rough guide, don't go below 1500 rpm), then change up.

Service your car regularly - not so critical on modern cars (fuel and ignition don't go out of adjustment in the same way), but worthwhile even so. (It's not just the engine - for example, if the brakes are binding slightly on, this can cause a big increase in fuel usage due to the increased friction.)

I'm not bothered about MPG, I will just be doing quite a bit of boring driving so don't want to be throwing money away through appalling economy. I make trips upto the Lake District at least every 6 weeks or so and live in a rural area will be doing lots of more interesting driving, it's just that work is quite far away - hence the desire for a cliosport.

I think it should be fine from what most of you have said, bring on the fun!

+Plus, I can be an efficient driver when I want to be :)

  1.5dci
dci's FTW, i get 58mpg around town, less than a couple miles, lots of pulling away at speed from roundabouts etc,
63mpg motorway, at 70+, max i've seen was 66mpg going for a sunday afternoon drive through the new forest, about 1/4 motorways, 1/2 small roads, 1/4 villages/towns

Although would love to see the 70mpg values other dci owners see... might do a service replace fuel filter, oil etc and see what i can make it up too

Just got back from taking 2 gearboxes to Worcester with Gray.

From Sheffield>Derby>Worcester I averaged 47mpg normal driving. Me and Gray were most pleased, especially since he paid for the fuel.

Or if your really stupid drive extremely close to the car in front so you pick up a slipstream. This also saves fuel but i would not recommend it.
