Turning the Cambelt by Hand?

Can it be done?

Whilst drilling a snapped bolt from the cambelt cover, a drill bit snapped, a tiny bit (1.5mm) and a tiny part of it (probably 3mm long at worst).

Now this little bit of drill disappeared as it snapped, and may or may not have made its way towards the cambelt.... :S

Is it possible to turn the belt by hand and check its ok?

Or is this tiny bit of drill going to make any big difference if it has made its way down there?

Help appreciated.

put a socket on the crank pully and turn it....

The question wasn't so much "by hand" more, as can it be done without firing the engine.

Yeah turn the crank pulley just throw a socket on it. Unplug the coilpack if you're worried

Bottom pulley on the engine, the aux belt runs round it. Its 18mm, turn it clockwise..

just go under the car and do it like that, sack removing the wheel arch etc,

Car's already up on stands so can do it that way I suppose.

Shall do it tmrw before fitting the belt cover back on.

Oh and Jord, why clockwise? (being stupid but I'm interested)

Because thats the way the engine rotates when its running

But if (god forbid) that drillbit is a bit stuck, could I work it back and forth a bit to get it to bugger off? lol!

Is this TINY bit of drillbit going to kill my engine if it's gone in there!?

Could make a tiny slit in the cambelt, which would defo end up with engine failure. I wouldnt risk it.

What Laine said Tbh mate. You could work it back and forth, shouldnt do the engine any harm, will just do the same engine cycle but backwards thats all.

For piece of mind though i know i would want to find it. If your sure it went down there.

I'll have a good look for it tmrw, but tbh, it was tiny, like properly tiny, as in the size of a snapped pencil lead or something so it won't be easy to see.

I realise it could kill the belt, but that would mean it having to first get down there, then stick somewhere upright and pointy, as opposed to just falling through, or laying down and just being smooth. I don't see it happening tbh (but knowing my luck) lol!

I'll try give the belt a full rotation just to be safe, if I feel anything catch I'll work it back the other way and just hope it falls out or whatever.
