Engine Tapping noise when stationary, ideas?

Car  PH2 172
Hi Guys, was dropping a friend off at the train station last week, and noticed when driing home that whenver i pulled up at lights or stopped, after about 20 seconds i would get a sort of tap...tap..tap.. noise coming from the engine? Car itself drove as normal and this only happened when stationary.

Just wondered if anone has any ideas what the cause could be?

172 on 69k (nearly service time!)

Cheers!

do a search for dephaser pulley. probably be that. get it changed at the same time as ur service

Hmmm, cheers for the vid, but doesnt sound like that really. much more of a subtle and constant tapping. Once ive recovered from 12 hours of travelling il go see if its still doing it..

My carbon canister/filter made a quiet ticking/tapping noise. Only noticable with the window down. Chucked it in the bin, sorted!

Can you only hear it when the engine is warm?
Does it disappear when the revs rise above 2k?

If the answer to the above is yes may be the hydraulic lifters.

FFS, that's text book faulty dephaser pulley failure. no prizes for guessing who told you it was lifters

Tell me more as I've had experience of these symptoms after a brand new dephaser pulley was fitted. Was told that it was likely to be lifters by a well respected specialist.

^yours isn't dephaser, you forgot to mention your noise is random! thats the belt kit making the noise on yours, i've got 6 cars (including yours coming back in for replacement :()

Got my PM today Fred thanks. Assume the highlighted wasn't aimed at me as you listened to the noise yourself after the epic day fitting your favourite aftermarket exhaust to the car.
Hope the part manufacturer is going to cover your wasted labour costs.

Ok so now it doesnt seem to be doing it as much, so im not too sure whats going on, but have got a video of the engine once its just been started, first time in a week..

i was about to post the same thread. i get a tapping/ ticking, almost clicking noise from cold. it doesn't sound like that dephaser pulley video. it's just a tick tick tick sound.

not sure but i think it may have happened after i changed the oil. can't be sure. i'm using carlube triple r 5w40. the oil is at half way on the dipstick, i assume this is ok.

i would check the plugs, but do i need to replace a gasket when doing so?

here's a vid. you couldn't really hear the ticking clearly with the bonnet up. around the 8 second and 18 second mark it's more obvious:

Sounds ok to me? and also i do think they make a tapping or whiring noise when you first turn them on. Something to do with the throttle position sensor iirc?

This is exactly what mine sounds like now, just changed the oil for the same cheap car lube triple r and now I get this slight tapping, it can only be that oil if we both got this.

I'm going to change to some decent silkolene and report back

Quick update for anyone that's interested, changed my oil to the silkolene pro stuff and engine is back running nice and smooth, even from cold! ....Lesson learnt...
