Reducing Exhaust noise in the car

  Breaking 172 NV676
Right my problem is the mrs has hearing issues and wears hearing aids. The current unsilenced decat coupled with a supersport ktec stealth system and no rear seats make the cabin noise quite high and its playing havoc with her hearing aids.

I dont really want to change it as I love the way it sounds outside the car, just need to change the volume level inside. What can I do? If i put a recessed system on will this quieten down the cabin volume? or do I need to look at putting a mid box back in?

easy options are to either re insert your cat remember a sports cat runs at 200 cells and will take the edge off the noise, or you could look at some soundproofing some dynomat under the carpets etc should help.

you could go chav and try some carpet underlay

I have already dynamatted the rear floor in sections (not fully covered though). The main problem is the deep drone that seems to resonate through the car. I am tempted to get a Yozza to get a bit more rasp but do not want to be forking out that kind of money to end up with a stropey girlfriend again.

I also dont want to lose the decat as I will be having a JMS pop and Bang Map.

I would fit a silenced de-cat. Saying that you'll still get the drone.

....Or buy a new car ;)

It wont get to the point of buying a new car, I'd have swapped the girlfriend long before changing the car was even an option

Well I dont mind changing the exhaust that much because I had kinda fancied a Yozza for a while but couldnt warrant forking out cash when my exhaust at the moment is fine, but it does give me a good excuse now, I just want to make sure it will help the situation and not make it worse.

The more I think about it the more I want a Yozza to be honest just need some advice from people that have had both setups so I dont just make it even louder

Cant you just take the batteries out of her Hearing Aids ;)

What about a Stealth Centre section and add one of the boxes back in, yes its going to reduce noise but you cant have your cake and eat it unfortunately in a situation like this.

I dont want another stealth, I think if I have the tip poking out the back that it will disperse the sound a bit more?

Have already tried making her take them out and she wasnt impressed nor did it help,

What can I say I am a big kid.

I just need to lose the dronieness somehow to try and appease her a little

A stealth even with the centre box and cat is still drones like mad on the motorway. Especially when it gets really hot after a long drive. I'd change exhaust mate.

I know I have to drive at 80 - 90 on the motorways to have a break from the noise sometimes as magically between those speeds its pretty much silent

^its 95DB with decat

I have read through a lot of threads on the noise and it seems like some think its stupid loud and others say its not stupid loud. I dont mind if it screams its nuts off outside I just am interested in internal volume.

Fred - as the expert is 95db less than what I currently have?

i would suggest in your case to go out in a car with one of our exhausts before you buy one, where do you live?

I live in Luton, work in Northampton.

However I am going to Worcester on the 28th so could pop past your workshop if you are about?

k-tec stealth is boomier than a YS Race

Yes it is boomier, but the YS race is a louder system.

I wouldn't want to go back to a cat (backward step IMO) so if If 'I' was to go for a Yozzasport race system it would have to be decatted, thus even louder!

BTW I think you should go for the yozzasport race system (with decat ;)) as they sound great, are built better and are lighter then the K-tec system.

I think you could fit a silencer where the cat used to be, or fit a better silenced ehxuast. I have a k-tec stealth too (mild steel), with a sports cat, and it's too loud inside the car, on long trip it gets annoying, in fact I'm replacing it next week, still stealth but different brand (Supersprint), more silenced.

KTEC do offer a silenced decat pipe and also claim the recessed system is slightly quieter...

Im currently looking at a new exhaust but cant make my mind up what to get, as I cant stand too much cabin noise. Maybe use some heat wrap and sound deadening? :)
