£5000 to insure a phase 1 Clio 1.2 at 17 !!!! Wow

Macca at work has just got a clio 1.2 on a W reg, called me tonight to say £5000 is the cheapest quote he could get !
please can I go on your traders policy was his question, no problems my end but would be better for him to have his own policy.
he is 17 , any good companies for young drivers out there?

​My saturday boy has a £250 VW polo 1.0L and pays a fantastic £2400 to insure it. He's buying a VW passat 1.9 tdi 100 Highline off me at the end of the month and will be paying £1700 to insure that. Go figure.

If you don't mind putting him on your traders policy then let him. In a few years his premium will be much less as he has driving experience and can go on his own policy

One of the lads from the southwest meet was paying about half that on a 1.2 and when he swapped to a 182 it dropped massively, proper random, so maybe he should try insuring a 182 instead, lol

Specialists don't tend to insure 17/18 y/o's or new drivers ime.


My friend tried to get a corsa c and got quoted £3k, he's now bought a triumph herald which is only £1400 to insure. Maybe get a proper classic? Interesting project and free tax too.

tell him to try admiral multi-car. I paid 1.2k at 17 for a 54 plate 1.2 clio mk2. Got insured at 18 for a 07 plate MK3 sx for £600 with 1year no claims. 5k is a proper joke, I'd rather save the money and spend the 10k on a car 2 years down the line

You mock but for his age bracket, the 1.2 Clio is a popular choice and a common car, as such is crashed and claimed regularly. Whilst I wouldn't recommend a sport model, I would recommend him looking at the typical car your Grandfather would drive rather than the obvious small engines clios, corsas etc

At least 2 named drivers on the policy, parents/grandparents etc... with sizeable ncb and good driving history. (This still takes my policy down at 24, let alone if I was 17).

I would try Confused.com though and see if you can find any cheap prices on there. Try figure out how much miles he is actually going to do aswell as mileage on a young persons insurance makes a massive difference!

Was only partly mocking TBH mate, yes my point is that you shouldnt just buy a car then look at insurance after, he should be taking into account if he can insure a car when he buys it by getting quotes on lots of different ones.

Was the quote TPTF? if so, try comprehensive, as this can make it cheaper certainly has with my quotes in recent years (strangely, but im sure someone will reveal why).
Does he have parents with good driving records?, add them as the risk load will be shared so they will drag it down.

Lastly as mentioned, try quotes with other makes & models as it could be a high risk car statistically.

Insurers make a loss on 17 year old new drivers already.. I cannot see premiums coming down tbh.

When you have no proof of no claims though cause it is your first year of driving, they need to be realistic about the risk you represent, and its a VERY high one!

If someone offered me 5K in exchange for covering the cost of all damage done by a random 17 year old in their first year of driving I would decline politely.
