£5000 to insure a phase 1 Clio 1.2 at 17 !!!! Wow

Car  Volvo S60 T5
Macca at work has just got a clio 1.2 on a W reg, called me tonight to say £5000 is the cheapest quote he could get !
please can I go on your traders policy was his question, no problems my end but would be better for him to have his own policy.
he is 17 , any good companies for young drivers out there?

Would I fcuk let a 17 year old on my trade policy!!

My saturday boy has a £250 VW polo 1.0L and pays a fantastic £2400 to insure it. He's buying a VW passat 1.9 tdi 100 Highline off me at the end of the month and will be paying £1700 to insure that. Go figure.

He is family , he can drive anything during working hours not that I let him but Macs a sensible lad
i think he would be happy with around 2k to insure

Sensible lad or not he is still 17 and if he has two pissed 16 year old girls in the car beggin him to go fast in between snogging each other, he'll be in a tree in no time.

Or their pants. And be a dad twice in one night.

That would be epic.

LOL

seriously 5k  they just don't want yung uns on the road do they.

If you don't mind putting him on your traders policy then let him. In a few years his premium will be much less as he has driving experience and can go on his own policy

One of the lads from the southwest meet was paying about half that on a 1.2 and when he swapped to a 182 it dropped massively, proper random, so maybe he should try insuring a 182 instead, lol

Has he tried any of the insurance companies on here, might save some more

Specialists don't tend to insure 17/18 y/o's or new drivers ime.

My friend tried to get a corsa c and got quoted £3k, he's now bought a triumph herald which is only £1400 to insure. Maybe get a proper classic? Interesting project and free tax too.

tell him to try admiral multi-car. I paid 1.2k at 17 for a 54 plate 1.2 clio mk2. Got insured at 18 for a 07 plate MK3 sx for £600 with 1year no claims. 5k is a proper joke, I'd rather save the money and spend the 10k on a car 2 years down the line

my first year was with aviva, 2K cheaper than other on the comparison sites. + got some back after doing pass plus

Tell him to get a cheap van, my brother got insured on a 2.0 hdi peugeot partner for £1500 at 17/18(first year). Come to think of it he is selling it now...

Try direct line, they were cheap for me when I first started driving, no good after the first year though as the bump the price up significantly

WOW, when i was 17 i had a golf vr6 that cos me 3500 to insure lol, i though that was alot. thats was 8 years ago tho but still.

^^ when I was 17 wanted a astra gte, phoned up for quotes and was quoted 5k, that idea didn't last long and that was 11 years ago

you's lot don't want to know how much my insurance jumped up by when i got the cup lol.. lets just say for the 5 months that was remaining on the policy it cost me a hefty sit down... 1845 thats right nearly 2k for 5 months TPFT, did i care? did i fook lol come renewal i paid around 1300ish FC..

Insurance is getting a joke now i think i paid 2100 tpft on a W plate clio when i passed and that was including a discount for doing Pass Plus

You mock but for his age bracket, the 1.2 Clio is a popular choice and a common car, as such is crashed and claimed regularly. Whilst I wouldn't recommend a sport model, I would recommend him looking at the typical car your Grandfather would drive rather than the obvious small engines clios, corsas etc

Cheers

What Ollie said...

Unusual car in a cheap insurance brackets.
At least 2 named drivers on the policy, parents/grandparents etc... with sizeable ncb and good driving history. (This still takes my policy down at 24, let alone if I was 17).
Then hammer confused/meerkat/go compare daily lol!

The first year for me in my clio is costing just over £3000 TPFT. But next year for me to be insured on it again(September) and it drops to £650 Comprehensive. Its unbelievable how much they charge for your first year. But you just got to bite the bullet and pay. Im with Aviva on a multicar quote and have my mum on my insurance as a named driver as it dropped it by £450!

I would try Confused.com though and see if you can find any cheap prices on there. Try figure out how much miles he is actually going to do aswell as mileage on a young persons insurance makes a massive difference!

That first year is a massive gamble for insurers.. you are almost guaranteed to have a bump.

Was only partly mocking TBH mate, yes my point is that you shouldnt just buy a car then look at insurance after, he should be taking into account if he can insure a car when he buys it by getting quotes on lots of different ones.

Was the quote TPTF? if so, try comprehensive, as this can make it cheaper certainly has with my quotes in recent years (strangely, but im sure someone will reveal why).
Does he have parents with good driving records?, add them as the risk load will be shared so they will drag it down.

Lastly as mentioned, try quotes with other makes & models as it could be a high risk car statistically.

This mindset really pisses me off!! Why can't insurance companies help out drivers that have no history of bad driving/crashes then pile on the premium if they do claim.. It's just punishing the good drivers for absolutely nothing!!

Insurers make a loss on 17 year old new drivers already.. I cannot see premiums coming down tbh.

They do?

When you have no proof of no claims though cause it is your first year of driving, they need to be realistic about the risk you represent, and its a VERY high one!

If someone offered me 5K in exchange for covering the cost of all damage done by a random 17 year old in their first year of driving I would decline politely.

Stats. Simple as that.

How many 17 y/o males have crashed 1.2 Clios ?!

How many 17 y/o males have crashed a Jazz or Corolla or a Passat as Daniel mentioned ?

It's all about the stats... :dapprove:

well after extensive searching on the net we found one that would insure him for £2200, funny thing is on the comparison sites we found prices a lot more than going to the same insurance companies directly online.

Thanks for the replies (:

You think its funny that a price goes up when a large commission is added to it? Seems kinda obvious to me TBH

Assuming you realise that the comparison sites earn commission for referrals rather than are charities?

Lol!

Previous to me finding Greenlight I used to used comparison sights and use the cheapest 3 to contact direct to get it cheaper
