197 intermittent starting issue

Evening all,

A friend has a 57 plate 197. Owned since new.

When it was under warrantee Renault replaced the starter motor due to a fault. Recently when attempting to start he pops in the card, dips the clutch/brake and pushes the start button.

Sometimes the car starts first time no problem. Other times it either makes no cranking noise at all or it starts but there is a loud whining noise for a few seconds before it disappears.

Anyone able to shed some light on the most likely causes?

Cheers, up early I see.

Unfortunately seeing it is not possible, we are trying to fix this issue ourselves. Can easily swap parts over but fault finding is another story.

Any advice at all mate?

Yes, Live data is your friend... faults like this are nigh on impossible to fix without seeing whats happening (or not happening) as far as the ECU is concerned. Without it you will be guessing which gets expensive unless you're lucky.
