  Inferno 182 Cup
Paid £2400 in 2015 and it ticked onto 94k on the drive home.

Sold the Recaros for £450ish (I think) as they were not comfortable for me at all.

It’s on 148k now, will be 9 years of ownership in 4 days time.

  172 cup + more
I love these types of threads....

I bought my Cup at the end of 2016, via Ebay for the grand total of £970.00 The story from the seller (who was a builder) was that it was his apprentices car and he had owed him some money so took the car from him as a payment. All seemed quite dodgy but I turned up in Swansea to collect and drive it back a couple of hours and turned out alright, don't like to think about how much I have paid to keep it going and up together but has definitely been the best £ for smiles car I have ever owned.

Photo of the car taken last weekend and when I first bought it.

The current money pit along with my DC2 integrea
Paid £1200 for it

Complete with brand new Bilstein's, belts replaced, whiteline arb, exhaust, induction kit and turni's.

Previous owner had the DS sill replaced by stevie wonder.

I have since had all the rot cut out, new sills fitted and just waiting on the car having a full external paint job before stripping the underside fully and refreshing everything

Can’t remember what i bought the Trophy from you for £ wise, or when.

I’m going with £6500 in 2010. On about 55k miles iirc - cheapest/only one I’ve ever bought.

Ph1 #2 bought in 2020 for £1200

Both were never "show" cars and needed work doing - the second one needed more doing to recomission it. Second one is for sale but I am reluctant to sell it as I won't be able to afford another one when I come around to buying another!

Keep looking at Ph2's at the moment to use as a daily....

That's some crazy depreciation. Did they depreciate that fast back in the day?
It was cheap even at the time, but some of the other posts here have similar levels of depreciation so not that uncommon.

Now we have that 11 year old R56 in the classifieds for £8k, and that looks a lovely buy.

It's just not as easy as it once was to buy a good newish car, mainly because there aren't as many good newish cars imo.

Paid £3k for mine a couple of years back, my mate had done some work to it already and so I paid a bit extra for that as he had put well over £1k into it and he had only had it a few months, would have paid around £2k otherwise. Im happy with that, then it got written off and I got £4k from the insurance company and bought it back for £800.

Then I lost my mind and started making it a track car and spending all the £££s...

Think I paid about £450 for this one. Added some suspension I had in the garage and a couple of cheap seats. Some new plugs cured the misfire and it did about 6 trackdays.

Bought this 172 sight unseen off eBay for £500, was told it ran so I picked it up from some dodgy part of London on my trailer. Lo and behold it didn’t run. Turns out the radiator had popped driven with no coolant and semi seized the battery engine. Put another engine in it and sold it for £1200. The juice was not worth the squeeze on that one

I might have this one… free. Well, I had to go and jump start another car as they were moving. She’d left this sat after getting a new car and was a non starter.

Totally original car, no paint on the panels, no rust. Towed it home, fuse box (and obvs fuel pump) connections were oxidised and poor, cleaned them up and she fired right up.

Not the cheapest one I’ve bought, but I bought a 2005 Inferno that had a load of tasty mods on it.
Guy gave me all the standard bits too.

Paid £2k for the car.
Spent a weekend putting it back to standard.
Sold all the mods for £2k
Did 2 track days in it then Sold it for £3795. And I think (??) @jenic bought it.

Bosh.

With the fog brake ducts?

I sold that on after 6 months for what I paid for it minus the tax so I don't feel too hard done by 🤣

It had had a cage in at some point, the carpet was cut and there were mounts or holes for a cage iirc. Tbf it was a lovely car that.

It was a proper tidy car that. The last time I looked for it, it was still going too.

Does make me sick when I see current prices

182 trophy in 2014 - £2000
172 in 2016 - £300
172 cup in 2016 - £2500 (should’ve kept this one)

Bought both of these within a few weeks of each other for about £250 each with Cambelt failures in 2010 - thinking cambelts - thats an easy job - if only I knew.

No point in thinking about that. My father in law sold his Lotus Cortina for £80 scrap back in the day.

For arguments sake let’s say it was 1984. 40 years ago.

How much would he have spent on storage? At £50 per month that’s £20-odd grand alone. Then Mechanical upkeep? Cosmetic upkeep? Insurance, tax, fuel… yes it has gone up in value a load, but if he’d have kept it - he’d probably be worse off.
