The Power PC Thread [f*ck off consoles]

I keep looking at upgrades that I have no need for, still rocking the 7700k and given I only play a couple of now relatively ancient games doesn’t feel like it’s really needed.

But a 7800/7900x3d and a 4070 super and associated RAM/Mobo is tempting.

I’m currently, and would continue to, rocking a Noctua C14 all packaged in a little itx case and it’s a cracking cooler

Tbh my above CPU/Mobo setup with a 6900XT saw 144FPS consistent on high settings @ 1440p

I just upgraded because I love spending money for no reason and at some point I think I'll get a pair of 4K monitors

What games are people playing now?

With the new generation of graphics cards due in a few months, might as well hold fire to see what they bring and what it does to current prices.

IIRC the 6950XT was a proper bargain when the 7000 series cards came out.

Stuck a 7900XTX in mine this morning, not tried it properly but after a quick blast it seems very impressive.

This means my old 3070Ti will be up for sale, I’ve just redone the thermal paste so it’s good to go.

How many times have you jammed your fin ger in your fans for the laugh of it?
Sorry, buddy... I contacted my friend about your old rig components but he has already ordered parts himself.
No worries Andy (y)

As some of you know my pc is getting on now, coming up to 8 years old next year and I'm starting to get my head around to the hardware, yes i'm a noob at pc hardware and software. And I'll try and pop on here for insight, advice and the rest of it.

My current pc spec is listed on Post 7171 which came to the total on £773 back in early 2017, be great if someone could tell me what that would be in todays money if any? Only thing that has been upgraded couple years ago is the gfx card which is the Nvidia GTX1050Ti.

I'm looking to spend around the £1000 to £1500 as a ball park area as I'd like the new one to last a bit like this one. It'll be somepoint next year when i'll be looking to buy one and hopefully by then i might even build my first pc.

Some of my current questions is:-

1. My current set up is Micro ATX , i'd like to go for ATX Mid Tower next, does this have more options for me and is ATX Mid Tower the one to go for now?

2. Intel or AMD , is it still personal choice or is it more too it? Been looking at the Ryzen 5 or 7 either the G or X, Is the G good to go for cost saving and for what i need?

3. Radeon or Nvidia , same as above ^^

4. DDR4 or DDR5, should i go for DDR5 as this might be the norm in years to come , so better to have it now? Noticed some of the GFX cards is GDDR6?

5. Should i go for the SSD M.2-2280 storage instead of the hard drive type?

6. How much should the gfx card be on the price of the pc ?

I don't do gaming now and since some players use a controller to play on PC games, so i might start and get into that, i shall see. Also i do a bit of editing on the pc, have loads of task bars open and I'm looking at getting a new monitor which will be HDMI 2.1, also I'd like to have USB-C somewhere on my pc either on the case or on the montherboard. Also to have a couple of newer version of the Display Port is it 1.4 ? as i might go dual monitor, so I'd like to have multiple ports on HDMI 2.1 , DisplayPorts , USB-C USB 2.1

Thanks

Been watching a lot of videos since my last post over a week a go and answered some of my own questions.

One thing i'd like to ask which I'm really confused on and seen a few videos and i still dont get it, it's to do with the Windows Microsoft Key, i bought my pc of Overclockers and i can't remember if it was a cd or if it was pre installed or whatever. I contacted them to see if they have my Key and they don't keep records. I still have access to Microsoft account and the Word, Outlook and the other. When i get my new pc next year how to i get my Windows Key changed over to my new pc without buying a new Key, i know you can install Windows with out a key and have a halogram in the bottom as i don't want that.

Also what are peoples thoughts on this build, it's a rough guide and there's still time for next year. Just getting some ideas and that.

All rumours about the new NVidia cards are saying they're going to be big time power hogs. Maybe consider a slightly beefier PSU, so you've got that option to sling a new card in should you wish?

I'm not particular about getting the newest release of the gpu's I'll be happy getting last gen , I'm not full up to speed on gen's and spec just the basics. I was originally looking at the 4060 or the 4060ti then saw the 4070. I'll be happy to pay around £-500

You can find the key within Windows

@Jonnio I've used 2 of their3 guides and found a key code, thanks.

Also, I have Microsoft Office 2007 and same i have no key for this either, is there a way to find this out on the pc too?

I see that Windows 12 will be coming out late this year or next year, just wondering when i get my new pc and if i get the key for the Microsoft Office 2007 is there a chance this could be updated to a newer version free of charge?

EDIT, i've logged into my Microsoft account and gone into my "Services & Subscriptions" and my Windows Office 2007 isn't showing up there. I'm lost as to why this is because i can clearly go into my Word, Excel and that and open them up and edit and save and that.

Support for Office 2007 ended in 2017 so I expect you might need to start afresh with Office365.

Ah ok, yeah it's getting on now Office 2007. I don't think I'll bother paying for 365 and use the free features. Noticed you can just go on Outlook and press the Word or Excel icon and it's opens a web page and jog on. That'll do for me. Paying monthly isn't worth it for how much i use Word and that. Alteast i know now just forget about the Office 2007 and not bother with the key. Thanks

Is there any info on Office 365 stopping and getting replaced by something you can buy as a one off payment, probs not there's a lot of money going there way every month after month

Hopefully posting this in the correct thread :)

Am on the lookout for a gaming PC for my son, 14 years old this time (birthday/Christmas present) but have only ever worked and used mac so it's all new to me. Am trying to work out a spec I should be aiming for, don't have unlimited budget, probably around £5/600 at most, but want to make sure I get something that he can use.

He currently plays Fortnite, Rocket League, War Thunder & Minecraft

Any questions just shout, thanks in advance.

Cheers
Gareth

At that price point I'd be looking to buy used to get a decent spec to run the games smoothly. Otherwise a latest gen console will run them well.

Thanks for the reply Tom, where is the go to place for used PC's? Usual suspects Facebook/eBay etc. He wants to get rid of his console and swap to a PC, have a guy locally who will build one for us but I really don't know a lot about what spec it should be or what is good enough

I did wonder that, he's pretty set on getting one, his mates have them, he has an Xbox currently but wants to move away from that
Don't get me wrong, i moved from a console to a PC a few months ago, and honestly i cannot see me ever going back they are great, but to get next gen console performance in a PC you have to spend dollar, but their are loads of people om here who have forgotten more than i know, they will give you some good advice mate.

Found this video on YouTube for you to watch, it's equiv to £600. This might help you out. He shows you each individual item of the build and what it is

I think most people tend to stick to PCs once they make the switch. They are significantly more expensive than consoles, but once you're on that path - the rolling upgrades aren't that bad. (.......for the most part)

I popped my PC cherry way back in November 1992 and despite having a dabble with various consoles over the years, I still remain firmly in the PC camp.

I'd be happy to put one together a new one for you at the cost of parts. But to get value money, used it the answer.

I've sold a couple on here and others may do the same.

Otherwise there are a few groups on Facebook where you may get a decent one.

You could try forums like ocuk https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/

@mintno1 Here's a very rough build, can certainly look on Amazon for more precise prices , I'm certainly no expert either but here's a quick build , the others will hopefully get more info on it,

i presume if you get a used one i presume you'll have windows already on there, so you'll be saving £100 ontop of a new build or what ever it is for Windows 10 or 11

If you want to save yourself the hassle of building, this will be fairly decent for the likes of Fortnite etc :-

Is there any new releases on anything hardware related later this year or early next year?
