Standard 172 Cup Exhaust

  172 CUP / MG4 XPOWER
My standard exhaust gave up the ghost so replaced it with a Longlife stainless steel cat back system, I wanted it to be as close to the standard noise as possible, anyway the Longlife exhaust is far too loud at idle and is deafening when it hits 4k then quietens down after. I took it back and they said "there isn't much else they can do, there isn't much room to do anything as they have put two resonators in with 4 packs of e-glass" hopefully that means something to someone as it really ruins the driving experience with it as loud as it is.

Have I been fobbed off? Is there a company that makes a good quality copy of the standard exhaust? The only other exhausts I have seen such as the K-Tec system all advertise it as a sportier sounding system, What options do I have?

I've got this with twin silencers.

Having owned the original exhaust and a Hoffman (Ebay special) The Piper is similar at idle, maybe a little louder, over 4k revs gives a nice exhaust note (not raspy) and isn't boomy.

Hoffmann Exhaust

Hoffmann Backbox

I've been through 2 Hoffmann exhausts - they sit stealth and exactly where the original one fits - they won't last long and eventually rust / snap and then it's not fun - been there done that. I believe the GT exhausts might be the same quality.

Thats why I went stainless with the Piper.

My 172 Cup went through numerous exhausts when my dad owned it - usually dirt-cheap cheap back boxes but I swapped out for a Pure Motorsport stainless cat-back a while ago. Unfortunately, it was just too loud for me so it’s now hanging up in the garage (DM me if anyone wants a good deal on a <500 mile exhaust!) and I have put a Klarius on - pretty much OEM in terms of sound with ‘just enough’ rasp.

No idea how it will work out long-term but it wasn’t that expensive so could be worth a look.

Its due for an MOT soon so will be getting a Hoffman / Klarius type exhaust, probably going to be my best bet for a standard sound and as for longevity the car only comes out in the summer so I don't think it will be too much of an issue but they are cheap enough anyway.

I will also have a good deal on a Longlife stainless steel cat back system with less than 500 miles on it, although I wouldn't its deafening!

I have a Klarius on my 172 Cup with a non-standard cat. It's loud on idle and a little boomy on a run. Whilst being tuned it was noted that it possibly had a collapsed baffle but it made almost standard power. It definitely sounds much louder than standard (I had a new Cup back in 2004) and when changed it's getting the closest to that standard sound as possible.
