Clio 182 Turbo

I've not done anything for a few weeks. Still need to sort the alternator bolt and get the sump back on etc but go on holiday next week so it can all wait.

I'm after a couple of recommendations. I need a clutch so any suggestions on that? It's still cable clutch and too much effort to swap to hydraulic so would prefer something that I don't need quads like Arnie to use.

I'm also going to swap the coolant hoses for black silicone ones as they all look a bit tired. There are literally hundreds of results come up. Has anyone used a set that have been decent or do I just pick a random set and go with it?

Mtc hoses are ok. Run them on my trophy.

Thanks! Had some eBay balance so a set worked out at just over 9 quid delivered 👍

I have the paddle version on mine, great on track, not so great on the road although it is useable.

Its heavy still but its more of an on/off engagement.

Once its engaged and you are rolling its fine but setting off can be interesting sometimes.

Cheers. See... the problem I have is my drive is on a hill. All my cars are auto now and I'm not convinced I'd get it off the drive without looking stalling 20 times and looking like a total dick 🤣. Also says it's rated to 350NM of torque and I think I'll end up beyond that even just on the EFI boost control module on the high boost setup.

First bit of Clio work for what seems like ages.

The new alternator isn’t threaded like the old one so got that on with a bit of threaded bar chopped to length.

Fitted and torqued the crank pulley. Took a bit of imagination on stopping the engine turning over, hence engine upside down.

Then I went to put the belt on and the b*****d tensioner snapped. The new alternator doesn’t have as much swing as the old one so couldn’t even bodge it. With that done I went in the house in the huff and sacked it off.

Once I’d calmed down I had a look at the tensioner and there is some back and forwards play (to and away from the engine) even though it’s torqued. Not sure if I’m missing a washer or something. Either way, new one ordered and I’ll try again later 🤦‍♂️

Clutch wise I’ve found a few options.

This one to 330lb/ft

Or this one to 300lb/ft

Both are paddle which I didn’t really want but not sure I’ve got another option. Would a swap to hydraulic clutch at this point make it a bit more liveable? I know it’s going to be a bit of a ball ache when stop/start but if going hydraulic makes it a bit lighter I might go with it and swap to hydraulic.

Me and a mate both have sachs paddle clutches. Mines normal cable, my mate fitted a tilton peddle box so hydraulic clutch. A lot easier to drive with it being hydraulic, he hates driving my car. Would like to swap mine to hydraulic but I can’t drive with the peddle box, you need tiny feet so need to fine another solution.

Can't comment on the clutches but if I could rewind I'd definitely have done a hydraulic conversion when it was in bits

Right, that's me sold then. Keeps the door open if I want to move to try a JR5 box too as they use hydraulic.

I can see PMS do a kit for the gearbox end. I can combine that with the DCi pedal box, use the same AP racing master cylinder others have used and away it goes. Or is there a full parts bin conversion available using the entire DCi setup given I've got a DCi box of some flavour?

I dont think any of the jb/jc diesel boxes are hydraulic, all cable. If your doing hydraulic clutch, do the full lot inc jr box now.

Stop giving me more ideas man. All I wanted was a clutch, now I’m on a mission trying to work out how to get a JR in there 😂

Can you use a dci pedal box with the pms kit to make a jc5 hydraulic

Yeah, that looks to be the way. I’ve ordered a pedal box so will see what comes. I’ll need the PMS kit if staying JC box.

Pretty sure when I looked, the jr5 hydro release bearing setup looked like it would bolt to the input shaft sleeve bolts of a JC.

Ok so that’s an interesting option.

However, if JR5, which flavour did you use in the twingo? And can you get a decent clutch and diff for them? I’m not sure what they even come in to go on the hunt for the parts.

Am I also right in thinking the outer CVs are different splines to the Clio shafts?

I think if I seriously consider going for a JR5 box I’ll get a set twingo shafts and take them with mine to the driveshaft place near my work to see if they can work some magic and combine them. I’m not paying for custom shafts on something untested so if they can’t it’s dead in the water.

Good question was a while back now was a diesel box i went for though, all the petrol version were very short ratios and no good for a turbo lump. Yes all the joints are different to a clio so itd be a mix and match from twingo/modus and possibly clio cvs to get it all to work.

There are also different shifter types on the box end, both cable, but one is for a dash mounted shifter and one for floor mount, they are backwards to each other. I know this as i ended up with a dog leg first on my first go....

ill take read back and try to update, was about 5 years ago i built it from memory. The build thread is on turborenault if you fancy a read/search

not too sure on the diff, pretty sure there is though as its a JR5 fitted to the twingo rs from memory too.
