Flat spot. Flat spot can be terrible on some of them. I chased one once that turned out to be just the flat spot/map but it was that bad you could get it popping and running rough but as soon as you lifted even the tiniest on the throttle it would clear itself. Map cured it, will see if I can...

if he said it can't be proved without stripping it down then he's not a good mechanic then!!!! leakdown test will show any issues up with valves not sealing.

Will be fine with that set up but with standard gasket you'd find it will be more responsive. Meg gasket drops compression by almost 0.5 ish fwir.

Would have to double check chamber volume but with the 197 head you should be about the same cr as the meg with a standard headgasket.
