    It's more at what temp it opens at. The 172/182 opens at around 89-93 where as the 197/200 is around 76-80 IIRC These do run hotter though and he may not have an issue

    They do run warm yes but this is also one of the reasons that they run a lower temp stat which looks the same as the 172/182 item but isn't.

    The brake pads are the same across the range although some manufacturers backplate dimensions are a little more generous than others which is why you should always check/size brake pads when fitting them to stop them seizing.

    On the thermostat housing. It's been a long time since I've seen a Mk1 but there is one for the gauge and another for the ECU. I believe one is Brown and the other is White but cannot remember which is which.

    Decats, as above, not worth it IMO for exactly the reasons above. Hassle = Money Vs lack of performance for said Money. Spend your money on making it lighter and handling mods is far more sensible IMO.
