Using a mix of semi slicks and normal road tyres is a recipe for a disaster. I run Toyo R1-R's on mine during the summer and on trackdays and they're brilliant but they are on four wheels not just fronts. On any performance car the tyres need to be the same type all round. As for different...
Go for DS2500's I use them all round now my 172. They're worth the extra and last really well. Ideal for what your using the car for. Mine is the same, mostly fast road and a few trackdays. Also use DOT5 fluid for a better pedal and no fade when the fluid gets hot.
Also check the tracking. The RS front suspension is very sensitive to kerb damage knocking the tracking out. also tyre weld has to washed out with hot soapy water and not many places will do that. I had a puncture on my Trafic and had to use tyre repair foam. I had to take the tyre to a...
DS2500 pads front and rear, brembo HC front discs, DOT5 fluid and braided lines. Job done. I've been using DS2500 pads on my 172 for the last 2 years and they're superb on the road and for trackdays. EBC aren't that great. The DS2500 pads work straight from cold so ideal for normal driving and...
If you've been playing around with suspension settings I suggest you get it all checked properly. Otherwise the tyres will wear unevenly and the car will wander all over the place.
Toyo R1-R's are good tyres. I have a set on my 172. They're not as extreme as 888's but still great for track use as well as on the road. I get mine from Demon Tweeks.
If you have lots of play at the hub it sounds like the nut holding the bearing on is slack or the bearing is badly worn. There shouldn't be any sideways movement in the wheel or the driveshaft.
Recommend you fit Ferodo DS2500 pads all round with Brembo high carbon front discs and DOT5 fluid. Also fit braided lines to eliminate pedal fade when the fluid gets hot. I used to find the pedal went a bit soft for a couple of laps after the car had been into the pits until it had all cooled...
If there's any wear in the dephaser pulley, this seems to exacerbate the rough running until the car warms up. Mine was rough when it was cold until i had the timing belt done and replaced the dephaser at the same time. Now it pulls much better from cold, but I still let it warm up before giving...
I've had my Phase1 172 for just over 3 years and so far its been really good. It's had a few electrical niggles but nothing mechanical except the dephaser pulley got very noisy, but that's a common fault apparently. I had that replaced recently when the cambelt was done. The gearbox is fine on...
I'd love a Phase2 V6. They look and sound awesome. I think the Ph2 is probably a better car to drive hard than the Ph1. It's a slightly wider and longer car and better balanced. From what I've been told the Ph1's were very light on the front and had a tendency to understeer when pushed hard. I'd...
There's going to be a Williams RS200 as part of the final batch of the 200's before the Clio 1.6 turbo is released. Limited edition with added tweaks courtesy of Williams. Saw some photos in the latest Auto Express. I'd love one.
Any car thats not been looked after will be costly to put right if it fails the MOT. My 172 has 120,000 miles on it and sails through MOT's every time. It failed this year on rear discs but I was expecting that anyway as they had been on the car 3 years and were looking crusty. As soon as...
2000 miles is nothing for a new engine. It will still be tight. Once the car has got a few more thousand miles on it the engine will loosen up and feel much more lively. I've had a new Renault Trafic since September and the engine felt fairly tight on that for the first few thousand miles. Its...
Mine is a phase1 172. Its not a cup. It's got all the usual accessories like 6 CD multichanger ,aircon etc. I've had the car just over 3 years and its used on track as well as long road trips and as a runabout. It drives really well and the performance is brilliant. I've added K-Tec engine...
I've had Toyo T1-R's on my 172 and they are superb in all weather conditions. I've just put winter tyres on the car and they are really good. They're quite big tyres though, 205/40x17. I've got a set of Toyo R1-R's now for summer use and track days on 15" OZ rims but they're a bit tricky for...
I had my Nissan Primastar remapped by Collins Performance in Congleton. I don't know what the power went up to but it felt much smoother and the acceleration was much better. Also the fuel economy improved as well. I was told the power increase was around 30%. I have good friend who does mapping...
If anyone needs to replace the number plate lamp connector don't let Renault tell you the whole rear lamp loom has to be bought to get the plug and wire. Its the same as the crank sensor plug and is available as a single unit. Part number 8200673203 kit sensor plug. Ring Karl at SMC Renault...
Personally I don't see the point in stripping a Clio RS out unless you can put up with the noise if using on the road as well as on track. Yes fit a cage etc if you plan on using it a lot on track but it renders the car to be virtually a 2 seater car. Not very practical if being used daily. It...
I run my phase 1 172 as a road car but have added DS2500 pads all round, Brembo high carbon discs on the front,Goodridge braided hoses and DOT5 fluid. Greenstuff cotton air filter in standard 172 airbox, Toyo R1-R tyres, K Tec engine mountings and Powerflex dogbone bush. Job done. Thats all it...
I've ordered a new switch from Birchdown and they are fitting it tomorrow afternoon. Good old french electrics strike again! Its definitely not oil pressure. It's not using any oil and the engine is sweet from cold so I know there's no issues there.
From what I've seen of the exhausts that hang underneath the bumper they are very easily caught as they hang quite low and are vulnerable to being damaged. Its ok if your never going to drive on any rough roads but thats virtually impossible in the real world. I have a standard type back box on...
My oil warning light occasionally comes on after it has been raining or if the weather is damp and misty. I've replaced the oil switch a couple of years ago and that cured the problem for a while but its recently started coming on again. I'm sure the oil pressure is fine as the engine sounds...
