Removing the cat will fail the test. Really don't understand why anyone would want to mess about with removing the cat and then refitting it for the mot and then take it off again. A lot of extra work for no real gain. Just get a decent exhaust system and that will give you the power gain you're...
I'm 54. Had my car three and a half years. I use for marshalling at rallies and race meetings, trackdays and for long trips occasionally. It's been a brilliant car. I intend to keep it for as long as possible.
High mileage isn't an issue with these cars as long as they are properly serviced at the correct intervals and decent oil used. Modern engines will do hundreds of thousands of miles now.
The rear strut brace will fit any of the Clio's not just Renaultsport cars. To fit the brace remove the rubber covers on the top of the shock absorbers in the boot and remove the nut from the shock absorber. Once that has been taken off, lift the rubber bush off that fits over the centre stud...
So is it a 1.2 that's been doctored into a 172 or a genuine one? If its a 1.2 then the suspension and brakes won't be as good as a real renaultsport Clio.
I've fitted a scorpion stainless cat back system on my 172. It's quite a large tail pipe but it sounds nice and gives a bit of extra power. There's a write up in this months EVO about a 182 they fitted a Scorpion system to.
That sort of distance should be fine in a Clio. I've done a 100 mile round trip in mine a couple of times with no problems. Just give the car a thorough check and an oil change maybe before setting off. Take a set of light bulbs and Hi Vis vests or jackets and warning triangle and first aid kit...
Mine has 122,000 miles. It's still sharp and really quick. It gets driven hard on the road and on trackdays. Done 15 trackdays since I've had the car and each one gets better than the last one.
I've had my Ph1 172 for three and a half years. I replaced the rear dampers with standard Renaultsport ones after one developed a leak. The ride height is standard Renaultsport. The handling is really good. I've uprated the brakes to Ferodo DS2500 pads all round with brembo HC front discs. Toyo...
It depends how big the pipe is that goes to the throttle body from the air filter. The air filter on my 172 is quite big and it's mounted next to the battery. A universal cone filter should fit but it will be getting hot air fed into it from the engine bay. You'd be better off getting a...
I've also fitted an engine damper that I got from someone selling them on here. It's really well made and that helped stop the engine kicking around on hard throttle on track. It's more a case of don't drop the clutch really hard when pulling away.
Change the air filter for an original airbox with a performance panel filter such as K&N or Greenstuff cotton filter. I'd change the plug leads for some decent performance leads. Make sure there are no air leaks into induction pipe from the filter to the throttle body. Also ensure the cold air...
Neil Roper is the man you need. He's probably the best head broddler in the country. I've not seen him for many years but he's a really nice guy and a genius with cylinder heads.
The rear heat shield can come loose. Best way to fix it is large flat washers and new spring clips from Renault. Or large self tapper nuts if you haven't got a Renault garage handy.
My wife likes the 172 and all my daughters say its the best car I've ever owned. I love driving it. If we go anywhere we always take the Clio instead of the wife's Astra.
I've never had any problems with power steering fluid on my 172. I've done 15 trackdays without any problems. I can jump in the car any time and just drive it like its stolen.
Birchdown did my cambelt and dephaser last autumn. The difference in the engine was amazing. I've heard a few F4-R engines that have a whirring bearing noise. Now I know it's the dephaser that's making the noise. It's certainly made the engine so much quieter and it performs much better from cold
