Is this a worthwhile upgrade? What does the D80 do that the D40 can't? Apart from the internal focus motor of course.
My set up would change from:
D40 + 18-200 + Sigma 30mm F1.4
to
D80 + 18-200 + Nikon 50mm F1.8
The sigma would have to go to make the extra cash for the D80 body...
D40 can be had for an absolute steal and you can prob add the the 55-200 VR to the package for just over £300.
Entry level Nikon/Canon do not have built in stabilsation, but you can get lenses with it built it. VR for Nikon, IS for Canon and OS for sigma.
Has been cropped, but plane was in centre of uncropped image too. It was all in the panning to be honest, and hoping the camera would focus quickly enough on a rather fast moving object!!
Was very cloudy and I was not actually at the show but on my Balcony about a mile away from the action, but luckily they were flying near our flat when they were not performing.
Still have had to crop heavily, but ok for first attempts, may edit the colours with photoshop a little at work...
My kit is:
D40, 2x Sandisk Extreme II 2GB, 2xBatteries (nikon), 18-200, 30mm, was using filters but have ditched them now, 2 cases (one for everything + one for just camera & 30mm), SB-400 flash, cleaning bits and bobs& monopod. Think thats my lot!!
Great pics, but I don't agree with the above. You don't need to learn to use the camera properly to get a new lens! I upgraded straight away and I still don't know everything about my D40!! lol
Mine came with a worldwide warranty and allows you to send directly to sigma, whether this be in UK or HK.
Worth noting, I tried numerous filters with the lens and after some mixed results the lens stays Naked, and filters make great Frisbees lol!
^^ ah crap - hang on!!

Iso 200 on both, F1.4 for the pots, F4.5 for for the Dog at -1/3 EV
Not really used this lens much for daytime stuff, been mainly for low light. Had a go this weekend and was quite impressed by it!
Opinions/criticism welcome!!
My 18-200 has been my main lens for well.. since I got it!!! The 30mm comes out when I am in low light and fancy something different... bit the 18-200 has been my best purchase!!! I now have an sb-400 flash which is entry level but great value for what it does!
