Make sure you've removed the bolt in the wheel arch firstly.
Then pull the bumper firmly. I always twist the top of the bumper away from the wing too, seems to make it a bit easier.
3/8 is a touch too big from memory. I broke my 8mm and couldn't be bothered to go to Halfords, touched the 3/8 extension a touch on all sides with the grinder and it worked fine.
While you're at ECP, pick up an 8mm sq though. Won't be much more than a few £.
As Danny said- i'd much rather replace the shaft.
You should be able to loosen the hubnut off with a breaker bar if you're not a big girl. If poss, do it while the car's still on the ground otherwise it needs to be properly steady up on stands for that kind of pressure.

Any 1*2 box will fit any 1*2.
Ph1 172 and 172 cup boxes have speedo drives. These can be fitted to Ph2 172's and 182s with no issues, you just need to block the speedo sensor hole.
Ph2 172 & 182 box has no speedo sensor, so if you fit to a Ph1 172 or 172 cup you'll have no speedo.

Good choice of car mate. As said by many, don't waste any money improving bits before you've given it a good go in standard form- they're bloody capable little cars.
