Its a perfectly capable camera will full manual modes and a nice big sensor for great image quality. Read the stickies at the top, the same principles will apply even if they do sound a bit Canon/Nikon specific in places..
I've seen plenty of images with odd flares, especially in night shots but having no filter has ever caused me to have any degradation ;)
And looking at the 'gear stolen' thread.... money better spent on insurance!
I'd be gutted but I'd be claiming it back on my insurance, I realise that's not what anyone wants to hear in highsight but you can get yourself fully covered for £10 a month.
Long shot but does he have any home insurance?
Go in with a mate and get a 50mm f/1.8? Otherwise a shutter remote if she does much tripod work or erm hmmm a cool bag, like a Crumpler Muffin top but she probably has that covered.
I've owned 7-8 lenses and only ever put a filter on one to protect it from drunk people and alcohol.
Apart from that they are generally a waste of time, get a good insurance policy, it'll work out cheaper than good filters and cover you for more than a few scratches.
True, my head was just imaging how many 1000 page threads are already on the interweb bitching or getting wet about this camera!
I only want Canon going 4/3 so my lens is transferable
Was this announced at a big show, be interesting to see if anything else is coming out also?
Reads impressively but this is one for the fan boys, I'll never own one! But does bode well for trickle down tech.
Now for Canon to release a CSC in the micro 4/3 format, then I'd be interested!
The fact that it is not aesthetically pleasing does not suddenly make it not bokeh, it makes it poor bokeh but bokeh none the less.
Pending the sale of my 40D+ 70-200 this week, maybe I'll enter something more pleasing to your eye ;)
Gelaskins fo sho, have had one on my 3gs for years, now all I need to do is find somewhere with a 4s in stock FML

Oh I get bokeh but any monkey could fire off a 5d + 85 f1.2, I'd rather enter a picture where the main subject is actually part of bokeh. Naturally if the theme was calling purely for eye pleasing bokeh, I give up ;)
About £150.

Was about the city on my Brompton and thought I'd check out the Blockthebill protest taking place on Westminster bridge, was only there 15 minutes but fired off a few snaps with my new GF3 + 20mm.
What a gem of a camera system, not a chance I'd ever casually carry around my old Canon gear...
pancake zoom, not power zoom.. the new 14-42!
As for the standard 14-42, I've never held something so un-inspirational*, the 20mm f/1.7 on the other hand makes me want to go out and play!
*I only borrow one for a few hours and didn't put it through its paces
Took the first couple of shots from my GF-3 & 20mm f/1.7 tonight. Can't see myself missing the 40D and lenses, this should cover 95% of my shooting and getting used to no viewfinder very quickly. Face recognition is also pretty cool!
Have you thought about the new Panasonic 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 OIS...
At first I'm like "oh sweet go Nikon" (jumped the Canon ship) but after a little reading the sensor is a 2.7x crop and they are bigger cameras than the Panasonic GF1 with a smaller sensor. Meh.
Be mad to buy this over the M43 or Sony offerings..
For the geeks...
Impressed!!! Fired off some f/1.7 ISO 1600 frames last night of random crap, so far so good, the focal length is perfect. The camera is a little fiddly and I wish exposure preview was easier to access but that's my only gripe so far.
Picking focus points with the touch screen is also very cool...
4/3s 20mm f/1.7 arrived this morning, sweeeeet, all I should need for travel etc. and about 1/5th the size of my 40D + 17-55 f/2.8!
Holidays are for holidaying IMO, used to lug around 2-3 lenses, not anymore.
GoPro HD here. Doesn't get better in terms of mounting options but the cost of them all adds up; chest, roll bar, bike etc. and now you can get a LCD back. It's also waterproof and pretty indestructible, theres a good reason you see them used on total wipeout, top gear and pretty much anything...
