Different car but mine did this until I attacked all the metal on metal parts I could see under the chair with a (very) small dab of 3-in-1 oil. Worked a treat.
My ph1 172 came with one remote key and one normal key. The none remote will open door and start the car, but obviously wont disarm the alarm. I take it this wasn't how the car was supplied then?
My ph1 does this also, but only when cold. It will also cut out on idle with full lock and looking at the service history, it's had these problems for a long time, nobody seemingly able to get to the bottom of it.
Mine will fire up and then die straight away unless I start it with a bit of throttle. After a couple of seconds it idles ok. When its warm it is fine though.
Does it click at all, the plastic button on the key I mean? If so could be battery, if not, the tiny switch will most likely have broken off the circuit board. If it's the later, try taking it to a electrical repair place or even a watch repairers. Electrician at work fixed mine.
Re: The PH1 172 Aprreciation Thread.

Cheers guys, great site and club, plenty to read and learn. Don't really know anything about modding cars but hopefully I will pick it up. Just got the 172 a couple of weeks ago, 45k miles, FSH, paid 3k from dealer with warranty. This seem reasonible? Car's great, just not sure about the...
As above, replaced cracked (broke in 3) manifold on girlfriends Clio Si (K7M) after running on 2 cylinders for 30 miles when coil pack went. Car now has very little power but runs and starts fine.
Any of you fine people know where I could start? TIA.
