Have you actually had the engine checked for damage by a garage? It seems like it would be worth doing this first before shelling out for new engines etc.
It's just that my brother's old car shed it's cambelt and the engine came to a stop straight away - same circumstances as yours really - but...
^ Pretty much it really. I had mine replaced under warranty. They do take the bumper off to change them.
As for using the washers, just wash the windscreen with the lights on - if you spray it for long enough, you'll hear another pump sound and the lights will get sprayed.
