Engine Mounts - adjusting

  BMW 320d SE
Anyone remember a thread on this a while back. To do with moving the 182 engine back on its mounts. It had pics and everything.
I'm pretty certain that my engine is moving on it's mounts - I can hear a clunk sound when I go from 1st to reverse and vice versa, and it's causing my exhaust to split at the join of the mid-section and the cat.

You can try moving the engine forward. Loosen the bolts on the drivers side mount pull the engine forward with the mount plate and re-tighten. It should have the gap show in the pic at the front of the mount, not the back (arrowed)if that makes sense.

also on that pic. undo the 4 bolts (16mm) and use a big bar to pull the engine to the front of the car as far as it will go. then nip them up tight!!

Can also stick a washer underneath the bolts as well as the mounts start to sag after a while, or something along those lines.

Brilliant. That was the sort of thing I was after. Cheers peeps. I shall try that next time I have a few hours to spare. :approve:

OK. So this is what mine is like at present. I take it that the whole mount moves forwards, not the inner part with the rubber on each side?

^Hmmm I cant see that moving much anymore, you already have the majority of the gap at the front. You can check the otherside under the battery, that will move a little too, if your still getting the problem it could be the lower gearbox dogbone mount.

Ok cool. I'll check the other two mounts next time I have a day off. What am I looking for in the other mounts? Ovalled bolt holes? Perished rubber?
