Just get on the track first and find out what you want to change after that. No point spending best part of a grand on brakes and tyres until you can actually appreciate the difference.
The guys are right about running track tyres on the road though, you'd be better off getting a separate set...
I got the V2 elite for £179 and I think it's pretty damn good. It's a nice looking helmet (the stickers just come with the helmet, so you don't have to put them on) and it's nice and comfy, great starter helmet in my opinion.
I tried all the V2s on at autosport and they're all pretty good, was...
Closing it off and insulating the box will stop any hot air from the engine getting in to the intake itself. So, by leaving an open side will cause it be hotter than we're aiming for. And yes, we plan on making a lid of sorts to seal off the top side of it....
Thanks Tony, we're still not quite finished just yet, but it will be done on time that's no doubt. Scraping all the change out of our pockets to get to Brands though....looking forward to sticking the car in "Clio Corner"! I wonder if someone will make us a banner
Not at all, it's modelled on the fact that it fits into that space the intake pipe attempts to feed as much nice fresh air in as possible. It's less restrictive than the standard air box, so I should hope to see an increase in performance, although I'm sure it won't be noticeable.
April 18th 2012:
The date has been set, we have booked a track day/test at Anglesey for Saturday 28th April and we have submitted our entry for the Brands Hatch race on May 7th. The deadline is now set, definitely no turning back now! We also had confirmation of our race number…..25, which...
Well, we're about to hand in our Brands entry form.... so, we plan to test it once before that and then just throw ourselves in at the deep end at Brands, see what happens. We're reasonably confident the car will be reliable, just gotta get on track and learn to drive really! :race:
This isn't an official update, but I thought it was funny nonetheless. I happened to roll the race car out the garage at the weekend and it was sitting next to my road car, looked like a before and after (although the after isn't quite finished yet). And yes, it is just coincidence that I got a...
I'll second that.... I swapped all 4 corners (with the help of an air compressor) in under an hour!! As others have said, it's not majorly technical, the right tools and it's a piece of cake
They are stiffeners.... spot welds doesn't mean it's not structural, most car bodies are spot welded together. We welded in a box section between these 2 ribs on our race car to maintain the rigid structure, looks like this:

The short Easter break can mean only one thing……more time in the garage working on the car! First job on the cards is to finish off the brake lines and fit our rear bias adjuster. We found a nice neat location on the passenger side which is out of reach of the driver and yet...
April 1st 2012:
No April fools' jokes from us today……just another update on the build. A few more jobs have been completed, including the re-insertion of our lovely engine; the alternator bracket has been chopped down a bit and the alternator now sits in a lower position. Another neat mod that...
I can tell you for a fact that 15s will be a lot better for your application and the tyre prices for 195/50R15s are far easier to digest than those of 195/45R16s. We're allowed List 1B in our series, so we've just got some R888s for now, I'm not too clued up on the best tyres in the 1A list...
I saw you'd said that in another thread Jay....and I've been reading the rule; it's not THAT explicit...
" (c) It must be possible under all conditions, runningor stationary, for 25% minimum braking effort tobe applied by the driver through the brakingsystem to each axle. (Vehicle models...
Gonna be doing CSCC Tintops this year, we're ambitiously aiming to race at Brands on May 7th too! With the ABS...it's already gone, it's happening now, no turning back. We're quite confident we can get it working well.
March 24th 2012:
Now that the paint has properly hardened and we have stuck all the suspension in place, we have been able to roll the car out on to the drive and see what it looks like in the natural light. We are pretty pleased with it so far, plenty more to do though.
After a brief...
March 19th 2012:
Another quick update; we've finished the painting stage!!! Ryan has been doing another wonderful job finishing off the remaining areas of paint for the interior. The inside of the car took a second coat to get rid of the imperfections of the first coat and the cage is now...
March 14th 2012:
Paint is the theme of today's update.
Rob has masked up the whole car, leaving just the interior exposed to the onslaught of Ryan and his gun.
After a good rubbing down and keying of the surface, we treated the fresh new exposed metal surfaces to a little bit of primer...
Gentlemen, gentlemen....please don't taint my lovely build thread with your horrendous terminologies!! Save it for the pits! (I have many more that will shock and appall you!)
Well, we're going to rotate driving. 2 of us will drive over a race weekend and the other will take charge of the pits stuff. Who gets the first go will down to the toss of a coin I guess.
Re: James/BigAsh 182 Race Car by TDF... It doesn't get much better than this! *Pic He
I did my ARDS on monday....and it's pretty easy really.
Practical assessment; you've just gotta drive around the track at a reasonable speed, not put 4 wheels off the track, not spin and show awareness of...
March 12th 2012:
The first part of this update is good news on the license front. On Friday, Ryan went to Thruxton and passed his ARDS and then, on monday, I went to Silverstone and got mine too!! (Rob already has his). We just need to send the forms off and we're ready to race!
Next, a few...
We definitely aren't expecting to be crashing the car, we're just keeping the cage as a bolt in, simple as really.
Jay, Tony, fresh question for you.... do you use camber bolts or just the top mount to adjust your camber?? We've got the AST top mounts but we've been looking at the eibach camber...
You have to be doing some serious speed to get a cage to buckle....that's the whole idea of them. If we dug in the gravel at like 30mph and rolled it over to cripple the roof and wreck a few panels, the cage wouldn't distort at all.
