The maximum size of a single file is 4GB yes. You could split the files to smaller chunks, but other than that there is now way around it. You could also convert the drive to NTFS ? but then you may loose the ability to read the contents on other systems.

If not you can set it to wake-on-lan then send a magic packet to wake it up using a scheduled task or a cron job. All the system in my work are set to shut down after working hours if there is no-one logged on, then at 7am in the morning a magic packet is send to the broadcast IP waking them all up.

You should try to keep at least 10% free on the system drive. Storage space is cheap nowadays, 1TB drives are £90 nowadays.. that should keep you going for a bit ;)
