Only take the tray off for servicing mate.......the recent flooding of the roads over winter look like they took their toll on the padding so I removed it from the tray.
Vibration and knocking mate, car vibrates at low rpm due to a worn clutch, just judder and this causes the knock which goes...
No bud, its not a metallic noise. Its a knocking and it literally sounds like someone is tapping the suspension or bulkhead with a bit of wood. i.e. not sharp metal on metal.
Most certainly not the first time this car has been apart, drip tray has been on and off a lot. I do know what I am...
Tell me about it Tig :(
Right, so last night a reset the engine position, was actually quite surprised how much it moved to find its natural sit when everything was loosened. Definite down side to changing each mount one by one.
Also, I loosened the bottom cover of the engine as I recently...
By joints, I mean ball joints mate......all 4 were replaced when i got the car with generic mo-factor ones.
So one side basically completely failed, passenger side. probably gets a bit more abuse with potholes and crap at the side of the road.
Interesting take on the engine positioning. never...
I hear you bud, thanks for that.
Yeah, I do all the work myself so I always try to double/triple check as i go, but parts still fail. the joints that were replaced were done so originally with the other side and still failed.
This feels more like a resonant frequency vibration rather than...
Righto, apologies for my consistent spate of threads of late but I really am trying to understand what is going on in the suspension of my car while fixing it myself.
So, as the steering was sloppy, wandering and hard to get tracked/keep tracked, I spent a few quid and a bit of time at the...
Hey everyone,
Not having much luck here.
Completely overhauled the new front susp this week (2 new reno shocks, kyb top mounts, bottom ball joints) and took it to work for the first time today.
Gutted to hear that the shocks are making a lot of noise.
They, well.....they sound like...
So yeah, replaced both top mounts with KYB items (that came with bearings and all, nice).......these were actually looser though :/
Anyhow, dropped the whole lot in and all seems well, p'raps they are supposed to be loose fitting for movement?
Lovely steering returned, most clunks now gone...
Having a close look tonight, it seems to me that there is a fair bit of wear in one of the rubbers......replacing both tomorrow and will just throw in bearings to be sure. Didn't expect that much wear in 2 years tbh.
From looking at it, there is actually a fair wee but of lateral movement...
so, i am rebuilding my susp as we speak and my top bearings were replace a couple of years ago with rubbers etc and new shocks today
but....
when all assembled, is there supposed to be a little wobble in the top mounts or are they supposed to be clamped down nice n tight?
ill upload a vid...
^THIS.
Mine was shatty when i got it, spesh' when driving aggressively.
Changed the gb oil for some good quality Silkolene and it honestly went away......it does make a difference........
J
Ok, so hypothetically.......assuming I was "speshal" and managed to pull out the pass/side driveshaft from the gearbox and piss out a fkn load of fkn Fuchs Syntofluid (read as "didn't notice until it had stopped").......hypothetically of course.....
Does anyone know off the top of their head...
Hmm, conflicting thoughts here.......... :S
Yeah, whole front suspension is stripped out trying to find a knock.
In doing so found shocks that didn't return but if they ain't broke I can't afford to replace them.
J
Fix the bend in the suspension and the abs light will go
DO NOT be tempted to undo the wheel and fix it that way.....as that is **** and won't work
:-)

A really fckn annoying one bud ;)
Going over rough surfaces I get a really low sounding knock, sounds like the bulkhead but hard to be sure
tre's all replaced and bottom joints/top mounts a couple of years ago.
I pulled at the inner tracks and couldn't see any play
would be interested to...
I wonder could these be responsible for knock as well seeing as the bush seems to hold say, a 1mm gap between the metal of the rack and the mount on the frame......
Hmmm
OK, so let me just run through this. Car tracks arrow straight now though can be very fidgety at motorway speed, always correcting the steering etc
Also, at full right hand down lick cornering over a rough surface, there is some real rough rattling coming through the steering
I pulled and...
Righto......so, on Monday I got my alignment done, 2 wheel/laser/old school style.....you know
Drove it home.....it wasn't great at all.
Steering wheel was about 5 minutes out on the dead ahead although the pulling/tramlining had gone to a degree.
Didn't enjoy this so I brought it back up...
