i was just wondering if im alone in thinking that the 172s engine is an unsung hero?
Its powerful, very flexible, not peaky to the detrament of low down pick-up, is smooth from base to peak, shows no nasty temperament, is strong and durable (more so than the rest of the Clio), is excellent on...
i like to hope so - i just hope it hasnt changed the character of the engine too much; its very good as it is and to lose any of its qualities for the sake of 10bhp would be a shame.

jeremy - sorry if this is a daft question, but what is reno trying to achieve with the 182 apart from being faster. ie. is the engine more flexible, or torquier, tractable etc, is the handling going to be more precise and so on, or is it simply a nip, a tuck and about 10bhp more?
ourtright...
an air bag with a seat belt is not useless. It stops you hitting the steering, dash etc, and it reduces the rate of deceleration on your head/upper bod, slowing it more gradually.
Im sure there are many reasons F1 cars dont have airbags; them being useless I doubt is the reason (the merc...
i find moments like this are always a good opportunity to take a deep breath, sigh, and then remind your other half that while they may be pretty, they are expendable and it would only take a moment to clear all their possessions from the house.
A man must stick by his guns on these matters.

could be that as your rear brakes cooled, they contracted which meant the handbrake lost its grip in the discs. Just physics, not necessarily a fault.

one thing Ive never really had explained to me, is the history of the 172 engine. Just simple stuff really. Is the block shared with anyother 2ltr reno? Did it start life as a 2.0, or was it a bored out 1.7? If it is bored out, how old is the 1.7 engine? Does this engine share a block with the...
for Gods sake, whats the bloody rush? Treat it nice for 650 miles (its only 650 pigging miles for crying out loud - thats nothing compared to the thousnads of miles you will drive), then you will have 50,000miles or more of great service from it.
also, if you rag the engine from new, youre...
mine sort of slurred rather than slipped at such. it doesnt slip when driving at all, just sometimes slurs if you change very quickly and apply lots of power. So now i dont accelerate hard until the clutch is fully engaged.

that said, because the 172 is v. throttle sensitive and can be made to slide if youre clumsy, you can either drive it rough and ragged and slide all over the shop, or treat it like a ballerina and let it dance gracefully along. It is beautifully set up, imho.

there are no problems with 172 handling. It has a very communicative chassis that tells you a lot about the surface of the road, and how much grip is left. Factor in that the chassis is very throttle sensitive and that you have a lump of an engine upfront, so if youre clumsy or hamfisted, the...
