Probably best not to knock something before youve tried it. Okay, the wheels are...ummm...and the exhausts are....errrrr....but I like the sound of Renault really working on the handling, so Im going to give it a go before making my mind up . :devilish:
Why, thanks ;)
Back to the stats, i dont suppose you have the actual ratios rather than speed per 1000rpm. (Or do you know how to convert into ratios?!)
Cheers!
There were 172 "172 Exclusives" built at the end of the production of mk1 172s. Not sure of the dates, but if your car isnt green with grey leather interior and BBS alloys, it isnt one of the last 172 made!
Ive got a very early MK1 with both Aluminium bonnet and working shift light. Dont feel too bad about the light....its not much use. Only time you can really see it is at night, and its very small. Also, its more a reminder to change gear rather than the "optimum" gear shift point.
I do like...
I need some wheel bolts that are 10mm longer than the standard ones on a MK1 172. I thought it would be easy to get hold of such bolts.....but apparently not. Ive tried loads of places and they all tut and mutter to themselves and dig out boxes of bolts, but no one can find what im looking for...
After reading that 4Car review I was momentarily tempted to get one. Maybe when the importers get hold of them....
Noooooo, I cant have ANOTHER clio
The 172 is miles ahead of the 137bhp 206 GTi. I had a 206 GTi for two months after owning a MK2 172 and I hated it. It felt slow and didnt handle at all well. Ive got another 172 now, which is also miles better than my 206 GTi was.
Just to highlight the point, this is Renaults official shot of the 2005 MK3 Clio. I reckon theyve photoshopped this too:

Since having the visible tailpipes/system on my car, Ive been hassled more by police and every 1.1 Saxo and 1.2 Clio in Sheffield. Im tempted to get the backbox replaced with something hidden.
In weight terms, Id guess about 17kg for the Cup rear seats (about 20kg for the 172 split seats). Thatll give you about 3bhp/tonne. So, not much performance gain, but every little counts...
You have to take the throttle body off to get to the spark plugs. Its not easy, and if you do it, be very careful when re-installing the HT leads. Mine have become damaged by being pinched between throttle body and head.
I think theyre fairly useless for this purpose too. Me and SilverRSC gained 10bhp each at the same RR in the space of a fortnight, and Id made just one change to the car, and Steves was still standard!
