Giving a 172 Cup some TLC

Here's a couple of snaps from under the rear panel... It doesn't look hugely rusty to me so maybe I've caught it just in time? Any thoughts what my next steps could be? Cheers

Ok mate, I'll stick with the 195s then, cheers for the explanation, dont want to lose any of that nimbleness! 👍 Hi, They are very different cars despite both being N/A 2.0l so I suppose it depends what you'll be using it for. My FN2 is my daily driver and I have a 25 mile round trip commute...

I suppose having replacement quarters might be a blessing in disguise! Hopefully you'll get more opportunities to use yours soon, it's one of the dilemmas I've had when deciding to get it back on the road, but now I've done it I'm determined to get plenty of trips out in it next year. I think...

    My 1 owner 172 cup

I'm just wondering what tyres people might recomend to put on in the spring, I'll need 2 fronts 195/45/16. Not bothered too much about wear rate as it'll be doing limited miles and only on dry summer days. I've got ps3s on the Civic and they're great but are there any at a slightly lower price...

Giving a 172 Cup some TLC

Yep totally agree. The car owes me nothing and it's a great feeling to know it's there in the garage ready for a good blast! I'm not particularly handy with the tools, although I can do a few jobs so I'm always on the lookout for decent people to do the specialist stuff. I'll probably get...

Cheers for the advice... I was leaning towards cooksport as they have 20% off at the moment until 2nd December. I'll check out the Grams ones too. Round my way the roads are so bad theres a very good chance I'll crack them 😡

I probably wouldn't bother with the clutch if it wasn't for the noisy bearing. It doesn't feel any different to the day I got it and I probably dont drive it as hard as I used to!

I will mate, to be honest I've not got the budget now until next year. Its safely tucked away in the garage now and wont be coming out until the spring 👍

Cheers for the comment, feels like I've definitely made the right decision to keep it going. I never knew that about the side repeaters... I've noticed the clear ones on other cars but assumed they were aftermarket ones. Just need to find a decent body shop locally to take a look at the rust...

Wow that looks amazing! I'll take a look at the thread and keep my eyes peeled for the mini magazine. Found a couple of pics of my old one: I'll be in touch if I decide to scratch the mini itch again... it's very tempting !! Ian

I'm so glad I kept it Iain. How is yours shaping up with regard to arch rust etc, have you had to spend much on it over the years?

    My 1 owner 172 cup

It was a MPI cooper 1.3i in red with white roof and bonnet stripes. Inside was a half leather interior and walnut dash with a mini disc player! Sold it to a guy in Norfolk and nearly cried when he drove it away but the Clio more than made up for it. You're right about the similarities between...

    My 1 owner 172 cup

Hi everyone, I've been lurking on the forum for a little while and asking the odd question. I thought I might do a thread on my 172 cup so here goes: I bought it new in November 2002 and paid £11653. The car came from Milton Keynes and I was surprised that the guy who delivered it just drove...

Giving a 172 Cup some TLC

Cheers, I had a good look at the rear arches and have given them a really thorough clean I'll need to get in touch with someone who can take a look and give me some advice. The car is safely tucked up in the garage now for the winter so wont be going near the mud/rain/salt again! I'll get...

Giving a 172 Cup some TLC

Hi Dave, Great read and brilliant to see another 172 cup getting the treatment it deserves! I've recently brought my 172 cup out of retirement (I've owned it from new) and have been doing a lot of the same jobs you have. Mine will also never be a minter but theres plenty of little jobs need...

I'd definitely recommend the PMS system though, it's louder than stock but not excessive.

Didn't need to have them, the exhaust is hidden behind the rear bumper and angled down.

Putting my 172 cup back on the road...

Hi all, I just wanted to give you an update on progress with the Clio... I took it to Alex at AW motorworks for some bits and pieces to get it through the MOT and to my surprise it only needed a couple of things and came through with just advisories on two tyres and a cracked ABS ring (it's a...

    Front splitter removal

Hi all, I'm replacing my original 172 cup front splitter with a fabia one and I need to remove the remnants of the old one. What's the best way to remove the existing rivets which hold it on? Cheers Ian

Putting my 172 cup back on the road...

Yeah my mechanic fell into the trap of throwing parts at it, which is great because I've got all new ignition bits but the mistake I think he made was to use a non OEM injector. Now I've replaced them all with OEM things are better. I might be making more of an issue of the lumpy idle as there...

Putting my 172 cup back on the road...

That's great to hear 👍 I took mine off the road after a misfire which I think I've solved with new injectors and other ignition parts. Although it still seems to run a but lumpy, it's not throwing up any codes or lights on the dash. I'm hoping the specialist can solve the lumpy idle, maybe it's...

Putting my 172 cup back on the road...

That's great to hear, I suppose I've been getting too hung up on the mileage!! It'll only be increasing by 1000 or so a year if that now, so plenty of time to get to 300k! Cheers for the advice 👍

I'm going to take it to AW motorworks in Dunmow. Alex comes highly recommended and has been very helpful in our email exchanges 👍

Putting my 172 cup back on the road...

Though it's been off the road, I've kept it in a garage and given it a little run up and down the drive every now and again to keep things moving. My ex mechanic friend and I have given it a once over and inspection underneath and all seems to be ok, but I dont think we will really know until...

Putting my 172 cup back on the road...

Great, thanks for the reply. What you have advised is exactly what the specialist has said to do so it's reassuring me that it's the right decision. I've done my own compression test and the results were good and a friend of mine has given the car a good once over for the other bits you...
