It will fit but the later box has slightly shorter gear ratios, also the later box does not have the speed sensor fitted for the speedo.
Its hard to put in word, but it does look like they are bump stops. The go on the silver sliding shaft that goes up and down, the rest at the bottom and are there if the suspension bottoms out.
I always service my own car because I know that its been done properly and I actually enjoy doing it. I try to do everything except for the cambelt. I service my brothers clio and my gf's suzuki too.
I keep the receipts for everything I buy, even for the oil etc, and my local renault dealer...
They are a right b**ch to get out of Clio Hubs, the fact they rust quite badly doesnt help, best to take your hubs off and find someone that has a 10ton press.
IIRC Giles tried it on his 1.6 and although the 172 axle is a straight swap, the abs wouldnt work because the disked cars have a different number of teeth on the abs rotor.
Its way too much effort for little reward.
