Mine did the same. Must have been overtightened at the factory. I trashed my passenger side one by continuously spinning it and had to replace the line. Drivers one was just as much of a pain but I knew what I had to do to get it off.
I had greenstuff pads and they weren't the best but the yellowstuff pads i've got now have been top notch (apart from munching there way through disks)

Ive never head anything that high-pitched from an engine before its not something electrical is it? ie nackered alarm unit.

Saw the car on Friday after persuading Russ to give up his lunch break! You can see there's been allot of work done to get it running. Its a credit to him and he's proved quite a few people wrong by doing it.

It would take ages to dry out even with the engine running as the ht leads will seal the water in. The only way to do it is to remove the whole of the upper inlet
I did this when I first got the car and I will never ever do it again. I bet you have got water down one of the spark plug holes. You will need to take the upper inlet off and investigate/dry everything.
