snow + clio172 = crap
i dont know if its to do with the lack of weight which is normally such a good thing (when the roads are normal) or the power or a combination of both but i agree with simon..i HATED driving in the snow....
pulling away in anything but third gear made the car slew...
seriously though..
mine has done 18,000 miles and I havent had any real complaints... got a few annoying creaking noises at the moment plus something odd going on with one or more engine mounts resulting in a knocking noise under acceleration but other than that.... nothing really...
nice...
im kinda torn between keeping the clio which is cheap to run and insure but not as fast as i would like and im not always happy
or go for the Evo which rules performance and in my opinion lookswise.....
but costs a bit more to run.. .ok so a lot more to run :)
a chicken ? :)
i almost had a mental breakdown one day coming home due to my car...
it was dark.. it was raining... it was cold...
the traffic was backed up through Wrecclesham so i cut through a little shortcut i sometimes use...
my wipers front and rear were squeaking and blatently not...
the best description of the creaking is the noise u get when u are on a hill and are holding the car with the brake and u release it slowly and u get that creaking / scraping noise...
but this isnt coming from the brakes.... its from the corners of the car or so it seems...
oh and arse by the way...
hopefully it was one of those tax disc checker ones..
another sneaky place they hide is just over that hill as you come past the bordon traffic lights... i.e the bit where u went off left and i went straight on.....
there is a kinda gravel bit to the right and...
sorry for being dumb but which little chef is that Si ?
the one with the "might be a mercedes garage" just past it ? or are we talking about the one with the Shell garage next to it ?
i quite like paying 81.9 p a litre for my petrol (as I usually do at the Shell garage I use)... doesnt really bother me to be honest :)
i think petrol costs are the only thing i dont look at / havent looked at when buying cars....
yes it would be nice if it was 40p a litre or something but...
hmmm....
well my creaking isnt a farting as such and it does it when im not even braking i.e just moving out of a parking space or something thats on an angle...
it also does it when i get out the car when i get home...... its pretty annoying along with all my other noises.....
yeah.. it SOUNDS a bit like the noise u get when u are on a slight slope and holding the car on the brake and lift ur foot off a little bit... but not quite the same noise though...
anyone else have this ?
at the moment i seem to have a good range of worrying / annoying noises in my car coming from different places....
1. The "knocking under acceleration" which im guessing is down to one of the engine mounts again.... ive had it sorted twice now but I think something else has come loose....
2...
when i had to have a new screen in my golf, although all the other windows were etched with the little vw logos the new screen wasnt..
i did question that at the time but it was kinda suggested "tough" its the same screen just not badged...
i think 50 quid for a screen isnt bad... the one on...
at the end of the day i dont think many people are going to say.... "my favourite is the MKx as I think its brilliant but I bought the MKy" are they ?
.ok so some people might do.....but i would never buy a car for any reason other than i liked the look of it... warranty doesnt come into it...

and yes i rang a few renault garages about the noise and they all made very french "dont know what you are on about" noises and shrugged their shoulders ;)
then again my local renault dealer was a rover dealer / garage until suddenly one day the signs got changed on the front of the building...
well i would RULE OUT the engine mount first !!!
at the end of the day, if its that then it needs doing anyway and if its not then you can sleep soundly in your bed at night safe in the knowledge that your 172 is one of the few that hasnt got a loose mounting on the passenger side !!

i also had 12k to spend... i could get a brand spanker of a mk2 (nice car)
or a low mileage MK1...
i chose the mk1 (and in my case no three years warranty... arse) as i preferred the look
I like the "features" of the MK2 i.e ESP and such like but i prefer the LOOK of the MK1 ...
well...
it depends....
i had a knocking noise under acceleration which WAS a loose engine mount...
under the battery.. and no, i dont think it would be easy to do it without taking the battery out...
THAT noise has now gone... i do get something which sounds a bit like "axle tramp" now though...
