dont forget...bigger engine means upgrading brakes bigtime too...you would be better off cutting your losses by selling the car and getting one with a bigger engine.
a good indicator as to the state of the head is :
run the engine with the cap off the water bottle, if the water is bubbling loads that usually means the head gasket is on its way out.
something else that I noticed tonight, when the headlights are on this doesnt happen.
I know my logic should point me to an obvious suspect but am unable to work it out.
Anyone elses brain working properly at the moment?

still have a problem where by when you press the brake the outside thermometer reading goes out and the dash lights and the light in the glove box go on.
Have checked thge spade connectors on the brake light switch and the earths on the rear clusters, they are fine.
Any more ideas before I...
The button on the boot activates the button on the end of the wiper paddle, if you press the wiper paddle button six times whilst waggling the gear stick clockwise, it opens the boot.
I only found this out by accident, its not in the handbook
I have the same problem but without the smell, I tried to emulate the problem with a bucket or two of water to see where it was coming from.
I could not see any coming through, so I geuss you would need a jetwash to emulate it properly.
At first I blamed the arial but on touching the roof...
I have a problem where by when I press the brake the thermometer goes out, the stereo dimms and the klight in the glovebox goes on!
I am thinking it could be a weak earth on the brakelight.....but before i dive in there, any other bright ideas on this one?

ahh fair play, that is very helpful as when I was checking it out I had just run the car....and when it behaved itself it was cold....

I have a clio 16v, the oil guage (furthest on the left) reads completely different oil levels everytime I switch the ignition on, so it may show say 3/4 full, then switch off and back on again it will show 1/4 full!...anyone else get this on their cars? :confused:
