Look where the gear linkage is though all the 6 speed boxes have the linkage on top so you'd need that sorted aswell.

Have you deffo got the engine harness connected to the car harness correctly I'm on about the 60 amp & 40 amp fuses connection as these would of been split until put in your car.
Also battery earth to inner o/s wing behind head light.
If you have any good freinds with a Ph2 try putting there ecu & uch internals of there key into yours it sounds like a lot of work but it'll rule out a lot of probs as if it starts just order an ecu uch + lock set off steve 79 he sold me one off a 172 for£100 , if it still don't start you can...
You'll get a Ph2 for that money in current climate if your willing to travel, again make sure the all important belts have been done.
I wouldn't touch one with 7 keepers.
Try using a jump lead from engine to car body to create a good earth then a well charged battery, bad earths cause havok with the immobilisers on these.

I've been lookin through your old threads this has been answered before your running your 1.6 box with the 172 engine have you used the 172 flywheel or the 1.6 flywheel 172 starter or 1.6 starter there will be some difference somewhere sounds like starter is missing the fly.

You say conversion is it running the full engine & gearbox from a 172 as maybe wrong diameter flywheel so it's not engauging ring gear on flywheel.
Did you do conversion?
Sounds like you may have a bad earth check the earth lead on the battery terminal then follow it down to inner wing 13mm spanner required loosen clean then copper grease also clean battery terminals & copper grease.
there is another one if you go in the n/s wheel arch wheel off the is an earth...
