This is probably a very silly question, however I noticed today when my engine is idling there a bit of vibration/movement in the auxiliary belt tensioner/spring. Everything is tightened up correctly so I'm assuming it's down to the vibration from the engine and the spring almost working a bit...
This is the best option I'd say. The box in my 172 has been whining for a few hundred miles and it's not got much worse (yet). I know it will need doing eventually, and when it does I'll either get a a used or recon box fitted.
As an update, they've manually checked the timing today and it was spot on. They've also done a load of diagnostic work for some niggling electrical faults (traction control sensor fault and central locking not working, which turned out to be dodgy key) and are only charging an hours labour...
Ah fair enough I didn't know that. They've suggested it may be a slightly sticky injector and to try some fuel additive to see if that helps. All their other tests have come back fine too.
So I had my belts changed last week and since then the car has a very slight misfire just below 2000 revs which dissappears when the engine is up to temperature. From reading through various threads on here the symptoms seemed to match the timing potentially being out slightly. Car has been back...
So my issues with my 172 continue...
Had to call the AA out today as she refused to start Typically just before the AA man arrived she decided to fire into life. Turns out that was an immobiliser issue (key fob not communicating with car), so that's another addition to my to do list. Anyway, as...
I've removed my plastic engine cover as it was missing two bolts and I think the engine looks better without it. Bit of a strange question, but do I need to remove the under bonnet carpet material as well, or is it OK to leave in place. I guess I'm just thinking it may get too hot without the...
Does anyone know the screw size for the airbox screws? Mine look like they've come off the titanic, so want to replace with stainless steel ones. Thanks.
If I were to list all the negative aspects of a Clio 172 it would be fair to assume I hate them: Rubbish driving position, unrefined, noisy, quite poorly made and fragile with more rattles than a creche, there's probably loads more. However for some weird reason I don't hate my 172, I love it...
That doesn't sound too good.
It isn't that loud yet thankfully, although it is definitely getting more noticeable. When you say too late, are we talking complete gearbox failure? I guess it really is a lottery how long it will last. Some people seem to get away with it for quite some time, but...
I'm hoping it's bearing related as mentioned as they do appear to go on for a while before giving up. It sounds almost like a cross between a whine and someone blowing into a metal pipe if that makes any sense. Seems loudest in 4th and 5th gear between about 40 and 70mph while accelerating...
Unfortunately my 172 has developed some gearbox noise over the last week or so. It's whining slightly in 3rd, 4th and 5th, although it not too loud at the moment thankfully. I've just had the gearbox oil changed which hasn't made any difference so I'll be adding some lucas heavy duty oil...
I'm finding the driving position in my 172 a bit high (seems common), and was wondering what people have done to remedy this? I saw an old thread about removing the rubber spacers under the seat bolts, but not sure how much difference it would make. Failing that would and aftermarket seat solve...
I've got my 172 booked in with a Renault Specialist next week and have been quoted £615 for cambelt, aux belt and water pump. I'm going to get the dephaser pully and thermostat changed at the same time for piece of mind so it's likely to be north of 800 quid. Was thinking that was reasonable...
It's not cheap, that's for sure. I've seen a few old threads on here where people have used agency transmissions for the rebuild. He used to charge around £275 but may well have gone up as that was a while ago.
That's a bit reassuring at least. Mine is nowhere near that bad yet so hopefully I'll get a few more k out of it before I need to get it replaced or rebuilt. Don't want to think about the cost of a gearbox rebuild at the moment as I'll be spending a small fortune next week getting the belts and...
So I fitted a new (well from a breakers) temperature sensor just now and it's a lot better. I can go from cool to hot and back again at least. I can still hear a bit of noise from the footwell when I turn the climate off, so I think it's still worth checking the cog and putting a cable tie...
