I bought some meaty jubilee clips today. Completed in 15 minutes.
With the belt already in place, I managed to compress the spring enough to get it bolted up, a few turns off the jubilee clip, it's off and the belt is all done.

Could you turn the diff while the box is in neutral and tell me whether there is a slight clicking noise or if it is completely smooth and silent?

There is indeed a rubber grommet with a steel dowel through the middle of it. The grommet slots in to the airbox mounting front and back of it and then bolt to brackets attached to the ECU and the front of the support bar that runs past the battery.
Yes, the place it appears to be coming from is aux belt driven and just to the right of what I think is the crank driven aux pulley?

Dropping the whole subframe was considered, but it looked like there was plenty of space this way.

I think I spent £380 in the end on the Cambelt, Auxbelt and De-phaser pulley. I think the forum specialists ask around £640ish? Irrelevant anyway - they are all too much of a pain to get to for me.
I did my belts and de-phaser pulley with a pattern cam timing tool only in the end. The bolt for the crank timing pin rounded and the pulley locking tool off eBay turned out to be the wrong one.
Timing was checked and double checked and all fine. Car still pulls just as well, and is still...
I made a video (well, the sound is the far more important part) of my car making the noise which has been diagnosed as diff bearings.

I can't sell mine for £3200 - no one wants a high mileage Renault, much less a sporty one.
The box is only £175, but with shipping its up to £225 and then a day of skinned knuckles and swearing. If I could achieve £3k by breaking, I'd do it.
