If it's grey/dark smoke and you particular notice it when you put your toe down, I'd be very inclined to say EGR valve. Should be a relatively easy job to do yourself, if it's accessible.

What was the charge in the battery like when it wouldn't start? Could it have drained overnight? Have you checked the earthing straps for a loose connection? They're all the things I'd be checking first. Get the car back from Renault before they change things (fuel pump) that they don't need to.

It's better to get the whole lot balanced, my local engineering place charge £150+vat for full bottom end balancing. Obviously you need to do the removal yourself ;)
