Believe it or not, the car went in for a service, came back, did circa 15,000 miles before I decided to give it another service myself, opened the filter housing and there was no filter...
Also, ran the racecar with no filter, hungry carb got lots of air fed to it :)
Thanks, I'm aware of the problems with bearings and torque - I used to own an XR2 ;) How vital is the spacer? Looks like whoever fitted the other side last time didn't put one back.
So I went to change the rear disc / wheel bearing assembly on the offside, was a right b*****d to get off but it eventually came off with my crappy puller. The inside bearing had shat itself and ended up all over the floor, but annoyingly the inner race is stuck fast to the stub.

That's a great shout from above.. the paint markings match (missed your post Tony). So I've replaced the cup spring with a non-cup spring. Brilliant. Just as well I've got an uprated set on the way :)
I don't really like the sound of "removable harness bar". I'd like to think it would be solid since I'm entrusting my life to it.
Edit: also, you can get a full bolt-in cage for not a lot more than that. Worth considering.
You only need a socket set (around £80 from Halfords for a decent one) and Spring compressors (£20 off ebay). Once you've got the tools you'll be able to do loads of other simple jobs and save yourself a stash.
