if it was the coil pack going it would miss and you would loose power. you will get a bit of smoke but not plumes of the stuff. You firstly need to get a comp test done it will cost you a tenner then depending on the outcome of that decide where and when your going to get it fixed.

if you run the engine with the bonnet open can you hear this noise stationary or when you rev the engine coming from the left hand side? (as your looking at the engine)
