Unless you're planning on drowning all else out with wikid bass, an underseat sub is perfectly ample at any reasonable volume.
My last car had some really decent door speakers, and this car has upgraded ones too, but the sound with an underseat sub is far better than the old setup.

That said, I was a bit put off by the fact the OP was swearing at an MX5 for daring to not be on a hotlap on a TF day, and held him up for all of a few seconds.
Hard to explain but with some notes it's capable of being very powerful (definitely to the point of being antisocial), yet some notes can't get the same power.
I suspect it's more of a headunit issue so I want to check it out. Definitely made a big improvement to the sound in the car though.
I have an Alpine SWD 1600, and it fits perfectly. Not sure on the quality though, but I want to get my proper head unit back in before I make a final judgement on that.
Yeah, if there's too little (or too much) pressure in there the pump won't kick in. I've never heard my cooling fan kick in when the AC's running though, even though on most other cars (i.e. not clios) it generally does.
