I've also heard stories about the way people drive a car significantly altering performance later in its life. My Mk1 172 has been rolling roaded at about 182bhp with no modifications... an increase which I can only imagine has come purely from the way it was bedded in, unless it's just a 'quick...
You sound pretty switched on for a young wippa-snappa! Best of luck mate, some advanced driving / police trainin sounds like a good idea, both for insurance discount and also for your own ability. :)
TBH honest I'd recommend waiting a little bit longer, to me it just isn't worth paying any more than £1000-ish for insurance. I know it isn't as 'cut and dried' as this, but over a few years you could end up spending £7000 on the car itself, for example, plus 3 lots of £2000-ish on insurance (or...
Yeah, they've gone past their serious depreciation now, it's the 182's that will tumble over the next few years.
172's will stick at around 3-5k for a few years now (as Williams have), although they will obviously gradually decrease in value. Give it twenty years when all but a fewhave been...
A standard 172 is marginally quicker than a GTi (on paper anyway) so your mods should make it that little bit quicker again.
It's close though so driver ability will probably play a large part also.
I'm tempted by the Type R in a few years as well, but they've become very common which puts me off a bit. I've always gone for fairly unique cars....
Maybe a Golf GTi in a few years, more family orientated too! :(
I'd definitely go back and ask if you can chat to their 'master' technician, and ask him why he recommended a whole new panel when you can just do what you did...
Guarantee he'll have some smart-ass answer prepared...
I suppose if you're young with a claim and some points, any premium is going to cost the earth, but I don't think I could ever spend that much money on insurance!
Still, over the next few years that price will start to drop, just be a bit careful!
Any ones in particular that'll do a decent job? I don't want to spend a load of money as I've kind of out grown my big ICE days. Alpine have always been good for me so will happily stick with them...
... but I'm also toying with the idea of getting an Ipod Nano with an iTrip and then having...
Apologies if this has been asked before, but are there any Head Units around that will be compatible with the standard 172 Alpine CD Changer?
I don't want to deviate from standard too much, but the cassette Head Unit just isn't powerful enough!
Carbon Copy's and Clarkie's are stunning, I think in time I shall be going multispoke'd with coilovers. Am I right in thinking Clarkie's is 17's, with Carbon's being 16's?
God I love my 172 too! Just been driving around, doing errands, occasionally putting my foot down, but mostly stuck in traffic, and I still love it!
Just watching people's heads turning when they hear it coming is great!
And plus, a guy actually let me out of a junction within seconds of me...
I'm the same, haven't cleaned it yet admittedly but the previous owner aid there wasn't a big problem...
The risk of fitting mesh is that, if you're using a tight enough mesh that's going to stop flies, etc getting through, you're also interrupting the air flow...
They'll refund, but there's almost always an 'admin' fee which they never tell you about, as it's not them charging it, but their under writers. This fee will normally exceed the amount it costs just to get a policy for one day normally...
Mine's a 2000 model, 50k miles and I paid about £5k for it...
I personally don't think the age is the most important factor, when considering they're all only a couple years apart. It's more about the mileage, previous faults, and how well the owner has looked after it. I'd much rather pay...
That's what I thought but these graphs are from a reputable rolling road so I can only believe what they say. Will get it R-roaded myself when I have the time though.
Lol, do it!
The guy who I bought mine off has rolling road graphs showing 182bhp as standard and an increase to 196bhp with the Viper. So, even if the starting power is out, the increase is genuine!
For me it's the noise and looks that do it, the extra 14bhp is just a little bonus.
Lol, yeah, the driver's side...
The previous owner fitted it and decided it looked a bit funny with just one fog so bought another intake pipe. I love it the way it is so no plans to change it just yet. :)
