R26? Step-up from a 1*2, quicker and better to drive (IMO!) than a 197. I wouldn't buy a 197 now(or ever;)), as the residuals may take a hit when the 200 is released.
For road use, ABS is useful, end of. Cue a dozen CS hero's saying they've never locked up etc, but it only has to happen once for you to find it useful. I very much doubt there's more than a few people on here that would be capable of cadence braking and steering at the same time in an emergency.
I'd drive both and go from there. As a side issue, the ph1 has leather, AC etc, but keeps ABS and weighs pretty much the same as a cup IIRC. Of course you have a pretty average dash design to put up with, and they are older.
H&R's are softer than AST's.
KW's are softer than AST's (both on softest setting), I've been told by those that have used them all that KW's on there softest damping setting are similar to a Trophy set-up.
I've driven AST's, H&R's, will soon have kw v2's. For purely road use, I think H&R are a better bet than AST's. Nothing wrong with AST's quality wise, they just don't suit my driving, preffered H&R's. Going for KW's as I'm after something softer than AST's for road use that I can stiffen up for...
TBF, it's a lot more than a facelift. Different spring and damper rates (softer than 197 on the standard 200, but stiffer than the 197cup on the 200cup), quicker steering rack.
