Nah bet all it'l need is a few valves and a new belt. 1.4's are easy enough to work on so id repair it, all the parts from a motor factor probably wouldnt top £100
Yes i have done one before..You could do it with the box still bolted to the engine... Remove the ring of torx bolts, and the selector shaft pin iirc.. but if u gonna do it you might aswell take the box out and do it on a bench, That way you can do a proper job.

TBH unless the gearbox oil was pissing out i wouldnt bother.. they always leak out the selector shaft anyway. Id just change the gearbox oil, clean the oil off the box and keep an eye on it. But thats upta you.

CAF?? dunno what it stands for. But it isnt cold air feed before people start. Renault sell it, it's like silicon sealer and it smells funny, but its good for sealing water pumps, boxes etc.
If your gonna do it properly id take the box out to seal.
Put pin in to lock crank. remove old belt. top cam tool in, with big D's to the top. New belt on. Tension belt with crank pulley off and top pulleys loose. Turn belt over one revolution. Tighten cam pulleys. tighten bottom pulley.
I am still on the case trying to get a copy of that tech note to post on here. I did do a reprogramme on a 197 for this fault when i worked at renault, but as said before, didnt really do much. Spose its just the price you pay. As for tech note info, renault dealers arent supposed to give it out.
