Who recommended you change the cat for emissions failure? Cats only really f*ck up if you have a bad lambda on too long.

Personally, I'm going to buy Willwood dynalite calipers from rally design, source bigger discs from a R21 (285mm which is enough for a MK1), and design adapter brackets and have them machined.
Easily the cheapest way to go.

Are you talking about crank balancing in your second paragraph? Obviously the force transmitted down the rods is going to be vast but if the crank is out of balance then the centripetal force would cause a "wobble" at higher RPM. Surely a better balanced crank can endure...
I'm no expert on this, but the advantages are that sharper balancing weights pass through the oil with less resistance. Meaning marginally reduced internal engine friction.

yeah, whiteley thats had a bit of a smash up.
The cross member has the rad bolted to the bottom of it and then the cross member is bolted to the main chassis with 2 bolts either side.
You can see the bolt holes on your cross member with no threaded hole on...
