Try unplugging it and cleaning the connector, first.
It could also be that the sensor on the rear axle could be faulty as that sends a signal to the motor to move the light angle up or down depending on the angle of the car/ weight in back etc...

I had this same problem.
I needed a new key. It turned out that the receiver in the car wasnt picking up the signal to deactivate the immobiliser from the key, as something on the chip in the key was faulty.

It seems to me that your alternator could be at fault. Seeing as your battery light and stop light was on at the same time.
Check the belt for tightness for a start.
I believe the alternator belt runs the power steering pump on the 172 (unless it has electric power steering).
