there's an American company who sell subframe/suspension kits for the Honda engines, including the 2 litre ones: http://vtec.minimania.com/Honda_Engines.cfm
you're going to need welding gear unless you can source a shell that's already been restored. and i guess you could learn about...
can you weld?!
any A Series engine will drop straight in; most of the choice engines will be ancient by now (MG Metro, etc). you could fit one of the numerous 1275 injection engines, but they're going to be much more hassle to wire in (etc) if you're using an elderly (pre. injection) model as...
biggest difference is going to be in the pad imo but some on here do seem to think fancy discs make a difference
whip a wheel off, file off the lip either side of the disc and measure across it - minimum thickness is 21.6mm; if the discs are well within that and aren't excessively...
if it's only a couple of weeks, i'd wait. you could bed the yellowstuffs in on your existing discs but you'd only end up having to do it again with the new ones and, if your existing discs are scored/ridged/etc, it'll all take a while to bed in. basically, it's a headache and you're better off...
may be i was spoilt by 8 years in a 205, but i actually find the Cup i've moved to dull - the handling's just not fun. the back end seems unstickable and the front's just nervous on the road. and the brakes are difficult to modulate. now that i've uprated the pads, i've got to be very gentle...
the backing plate just sounds like an anti-rattle shim - you can't usually re-use them but can get new self adhesive ones, or try using copper grease
does sound as though you may have the wrong pads if they're a centimetre swallower, though
ed. but you say they're genuine Renault? may be...
i ran an '83 City E for about ten years and thought i'd taken my time (about 7 months) restoring the shell!
that's brought back some memories - great read. good luck with the final stages!
you could save on discs if they don't actually need replacing, and the benefit of hoses is debatable (esp. on a road car)
you should see a big difference if you uprate the front pads and change to a good fluid, properly bled through the system
looks as thought you've a stainless cat-back system fitted. that flange is just as it is on the OE system though. you could try sealing it with Loctite 5920 (Halfords) which is a copper based silicone sealant.
if that doesn't help, i reckon you've got some sort of problem with the cat itself...
you do occasionaly see photos of tyres that have been scrubbed halfway up the sidewall (i guess, problems with pressures/geometry/driving style), but those Paradas are pretty impressive!
just bedded in my Redstuffs and they're much better than the standard pads, even from cold. not much more expensive than Greens and they're supposed to produce even less dust
ah - that wasn't me in that case, although i've just been using the same roads
there are a good 4 or 5 others that i see around regularly
ed. is that your car in your avatar? and do you frequent Winterbourne?
