Second hand engine is better idea.
Sounds like the AUX belt hasn't been chnaged as per the speciifaction at 36k which has broken your cambelt as it does.
If it is then either if your keeping the engine for ages get a new 172 one from brand new crated up for £1.25k or so and then its 15 hours...
There a 50Ohm tolerance I think so should be OK. They fail so much might as well change it.
Check the throttle bdy is clean and works correctly.
You did replace the coils and leads with the correct ones?
Nope the CUp has different speings etc so it has a lower offcial ride high but the normal tolerances mean that a full fat 172 could infact be lower than Cup and them both be correct.
5mm at the front 7 at the back I think or its the other way round. Its 3mm on the 182's. ALso the 172 Cup has...
Wiring suns the most lily but check the pipes are clean and working. You can disconnect the pipes to the front wahsers and check water comming out if it does then the pipe needs cleaning out.
Sounds like the cambelt tensioners or aux belt pretensionser are the problem.
Personally I'd take it to another garage see what they say it might just be the AUX belt temsioners what milage are you on they might not have chnaged them when they chnaged the AUX belt if the garage wanted to save...
Does the red ling on the dash go out when you put the key in the ingition and turn it? if not then the imobiliser is cutting in most likly the imobiliser ring is at fault. Check with another key.
IF it is goin off then check all the fuses si the fuel pump starting.
16's maximum IMO for use 15's would be better.
The handing wll be dfferent but it depends where you drive if you'r handing will get worst although define worst everyone has different ideas.
Same manifold on the full fat 172.
MAny epopel will say use the 182 one as its better for power and have a custom decat pipe made but post in the wanted area peopl who are converting to 182 exhaust manifold will sell there old ones off cheap.
Unusual for it to blow though has it got a hole...
Dealers don't want the problem of trying to claim so make up there own stored or amke it difficult for any work to be done.

Trade policies let you do that but there often not cheap and you've got to prove your a business not just a 17 year old who wants cheap insurance on high insurance group car.
There was a casea while agao of a lad who started a police crashed the Calibra turbo he had on it and the company...
I'd say write off depnds on compnay but for the cost particuly if its an expensive sporty model then body panels are more expensive so more likly a write off.
