Manuals wrong you can use 10-40 or 5-40 there a few grades you can use 5-40 is better but unless temps drop below -20 10-40 is fine.

Most likly you've gone and kncoked a sensor off the engine manifold them need to get under the bonnet check for any connections which are obviously disconnected.
